New America American Strategy Program Director Steve Clemons shares his thoughts on the Bush administration's removing North Korea from the "Axis of Evil" list.

Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

I just posted this piece regarding John Bolton's fortress strategy against the New York Times' UN-watcher Warren Hoge.

There is something wrong when the recess-appointed Bolton thinks its great to speak at the Jesse Helms Center but won't give the time of day to the New York Times.

But that's the way TWN thought he would behave all along.

There's a Jesse Helms Center? Sweet Jesus... free speech hurts.

Repackage a quote time:

There is something wrong when the VICE PRESIDENT thinks its great to speak with RUSS LIMBAUGH but won't give the time of day to the New York Times.

That Bolton is a card. John Bolton is the 'Yosemite Sam' of American diplomacy. There is an odd similarity between 'Sam' and the Bolton. Bolton is just as likely to go smooth off as 'Yosemite' tossing a lit match into powder magazine. Maybe that is exactly what George Bush intended. American foreign policy is reduced to cartoon like coherence.

It's Rush...Rush Limbaugh, koreyel. And, Hodge is going to write the same slash-and-burn story/book with or without Bolton's input. Only now, he won't be able to say "Bolton looked uneasy when asked about his working-relationship with the Secretary" or "Bolton's eyes 'signaled' resentment toward his superiors in the State Demartment." I could practically write the article for him...

The man works seven days a week advocating for American foreign policy interests and pushing to reform and legitimize the UN, as the two are one-and-the-same. And, you clowns sit around accusing him of being some conspiritorial nut. I challenge you to come up with a tactical or a substantive policy misstep he has made.

"The man works seven days a week advocating for American foreign policy interests...."

>Let's see...that would be "global empire", right?

>You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Take a look at the past speakers at the Jessie Helms Center and every last one are conservatives - game players all. Oh, well, so much for "enlightenment".

Phocion,

As if Steve never talks about policy, as if he has never legitimately delved into Bolton's actions or M.O.

Seriously, why is Bush keeping the Mars mission secret? That's clearly where you are commenting from. The sweet, sweet Mars of a neocon's pipe dream.

Steve,

Do you spend any time out of your day speaking with dirty rags?

The NY Times is a disgrace, theyve become the joke of the news industry, they have lost circulation numbers consecutively the past two years.

I didn't think Bolton was the right guy for the UN job but I have to admit, he's done a very good job since he's been there. The UN needs major shaking up. If Bolton can get that done, more power to him.

Posted by avaroo Feb 13, 11:40AM - Link

Bolton does look like Yosemite Sam though. Whoever said that above, hit it head on. What is with the stash? Why do some men think that's attractive?

Posted by Johnnie Oz Feb 13, 7:57PM - Link

Guilt by association? Hmmm.

Other speakers who have spoken at the Jesse Helms Center include:
Albright, Rice, Harry Wu, Holbrooke and the UN Ambassador everyone said Bolton was not, Jeanne Kirkpatrick.

Sure you could argue that he shouldn't do this while in office, but several of the other speakers were also in office at the time. And that would include the Dalai Lama!!!

So perhaps it's better to stick to concrete policy critiques. And in so doing, mention that Ambassador Bolton has suprised a lot of people with some useful moves. This would not only be fair, but lend more credibility to some of your justified objections.
