When will Rumsfeld be held accountable and fired?

ABC News is reporting that the Pentagon is now investigating another alleged serious atrocity.

One question is why is the Pentagon investigating? Why not the FBI or Attorney General, or prosecutors empowered by Congress? The Pentagon is proving to be an incapable investigator of its own offenses.

Steve, you just answered your own question.

If the DOJ investigated it, they might stumble on the truth. Bush's cabinet is the embodiment of the Peter Principle. No wonder the only competent one, Paul O'Neill, go forced out.

The DOJ doesn't give a fig what Defense does to Iraqis. Congress doesn't give a fig what Defense does to Iraqis. The Bush team of mass murderers cares, but only about getting caught in a low-level genocide. Besides, shooting children makes for the easy kill ratio and that is a "metrics" that Donald Rumsfeld can measure for certain.

another charge of incompetence...
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is not competent to lead our armed forces. First, his failure to build coalitions with our allies from what he dismissively called "old Europe" has imposed far greater demands and risks on our soldiers in Iraq than necessary. Second, he alienated his allies in our own military, ignoring the advice of seasoned officers and denying subordinates any chance for input. -Paul D. Eaton, a retired Army major general, in charge of training the Iraqi military from 2003 to 2004.
i'm not going to bore you (or myself) with yet another rant about how i don't believe that anything the bush administration has done has been out of incompetence... they're accomplishing precisely what they set out to do... and, as much as i appreciate you, steve, and a retired major general speaking out, the naivete of calling for rumsfeld - or any member of the bush administration - to step down after watching the events of the past six years unfold is beyond disingenuous...

Calls for Rumsfeld's resignation are fatuous at this point. If he were ever going to be let go, it would have been between the 2004 election and Bush's second term.

But this is the Cheney administration, and so we're stuck with these war criminals in their bubble of denial until January 2009 (unless there's a huge groundswell for impeachment that takes out Cheney as well as Bush, and even then....)

They're an organization unto themselves, so there's no point whatsoever in trying to pretend Rumsfeld is something apart from this regime, or that the Cheney-Bush war policies would have worked fine if only Rumsfeld had been replaced by someone more competent.

I pray that I will live to see the day when these criminals are brought to trial.

I see Donald's demonstrating his "Viper Fang Hand" fighting technique....

Greetings:

Unfortunately, I would also associate myself with the commenters above. As if Rumsfeld's leaving would change much of anything at this point ....Our current foreign policy is a very real case of a horse having left the barn already... someone's (anyones ...) mere resignation (w/ exception of Cheney/Bush themselves...& I don't think that is in the cards) would be nothing more than so much smoke and noise...but not much else...count me in as another january 2009 person..

The more muslims these slimey bastards inflame, the more muslims these slimey bastards get to eradicate. Its really quite simple. Rumsfeld and Cheney's fondest wet dream is to eventually nuke a few hundred thousand of them at a time. It is so much quicker than ovens are.

After the last five years do any of you REALLY doubt the depth of evil that this administration possesses???? Just look at the body language of the abomination, Rumsfeld. Good God, the man is a certifiable megalomaniac. Resign??? Get fired??? You're dreamin'. The very actions you think deserve such measures are the very actions that guarantee his continued tenure in this administration.

Democracy is messy.

Rummy has offered to resign several times but Bush won't let him. I think this is actually Powell's "Pottery Barn" rule in action, same with Condi. In addition to making people live in their decisions I very much suspect that Bush doesn't have much trust in letting Rummy, and anyone else, leave... or in letting someone new into his Mad House.

I agree with Jerry. If one of the true believers like Rumsfeld left, he'd probably write a book documenting the intellectual shortcomings of our Commander-in-Chief. (Memo to world: Bush thinks he's smart.)

JFK described his management style as being the center of a wheel, wherein all spokes lead to him; Bush's is a stage curtain--lift up his shallow covering and the real Wizards of Oz (Rummy and Cheney) would be shown pulling the levers.
