Tom DeLay once joked at a DC dinner I attended that the only conservative he saw preparing to run for president was Hillary Clinton. He unveiled a bunch of political signs that said "Hillary and the Hammer in 2008." So, we should all watch out.
DeLay should never be underestimated, even after some time in political exile -- which he may be entering.
DeLay has just announced that he is withdrawing from his race to return to Congress in the next session.
I think that all arenas of public policy will improve, somewhat, with DeLay's departure from Congress.
On the other hand, the Dems lose a very good foil to run against in their 2006 campaigns.
Watch for more DeLay legal news in coming days, but this is the whopper outcome no matter what happens ahead.

This is fantastic news.
Delay leaving the race is MUCH better than him staying in, because it shows the public that the GOP is weak.
There is a remote but realistic chance that Boehner and Hastert will be forced out as well, over Coingate problems (Hastert's not the Illinoisian who's retiring, is he?)
Oh don't worry, Democrats can run against Delay. Even better, they can run against a clearly guilty Delay too scared to face the voters.

DeLay in "political exile", Steve? I think it's
going to be a little more than that. As DeLay's
ex-aids and current aids plead guilty to various
felonies, the prosecutors are simply working their
way up the food chain. It's very clear that they
are headed for DeLay. This is much more serious
than Ronnie Earle in Texas. This is corruption to
the tune of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. What Tom DeLay really means is that he's
not running so that he can spend quality time with
his criminal defense attornies.
The only political exile DeLay will be in is the
exile of a long stay as a guest of the Federal
Government. DeLay has a lot to answer for, moral,
political and legal. Perhaps he can compare notes
with Kennyboy Lay and Jeff Skilling of Enron fame
as they serve time together.

Wild guess; one of the Delay aides has been singing to the prosecutors and turning in evidence against the Hammer. Rove probably found out about it and made Delay an offer he couldn't refuse. Resign now and there will be a pardon before Bush leaves office.
This is a disaster. With DeLay as the candidate, we had a much better chance of picking up that district. Maybe your posters don't know how Conservative Sugarland is. A coconut running as Republican is competitive there.
