Recently, I wrote about an important interim report that was issued by a Temporary Committee of the European Parliament investigating the complicity of European governments in illegally collaborating and cooperating with the CIA on secret enemy combatant detention centers and clandestine rendition-related flight traffic.

Cem Oezdemir, who is a Member of the European Parliament from Germany and a former Memer of the German Bundestag, is Vice President of the European Parliament's Temporary Committee on the Alleged Use of European Countries by the CIA for the Secret Transport and Illegal Detention of Prisoners.

When last I wrote about this report, only a short roster of talking points was available in English. The Interim Report is now fully translated and is available in English here.

Today, I am hosting Cem Oezdemir at the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C. to discuss this report. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. and will end at 2:15 p.m. for those nearby who want to stop in. Quite a lot of media are coming.

Hi Steve --

Just took a quick look of the Human Rights Council vote. If you haven't noticed it yet, it's noteworthy that had the election taken place under the U.S. plan, it would not have prevented any governments under SC sanctions for HR abuses from being elected (as none ran anyway!) but would have kept Iraqi war supporters Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic off (under the 2/3rds rule).

Quick question--wouldn't a flight originating from a foreign country that wishes to fly over European land be required to inform those countries who and what they are? Doesn't common sense tell us that the Europeans HAD to have known what those flights were all about? After all, I'm pretty certain the CIA doesn't fly over Spain or Holland without announcing who they are and where they're going, could they? Perhaps they're more clandestine that I thought...

Steve ---- So is the thinking that the man that brought u warrantless spying on American Citizens (Hayden) should now run the agency that does extraordinary rendition and a gulag of secret prisons around the world?

... which by the way, has asked Congress for expanded powers for the CIA and NSA security forces to do warrantless arrests.

Is that because the FBI doesn't do warrantless arrests?
