Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

One chronologist has just noted that it has been exactly 1,800 days since George W. Bush said he would get Osama bin Laden.

What got in the way of Bush's plan? Two things -- Dick Cheney and Iraq.

Had Bush stayed on track, shut down bin Laden and gotten to work on redressing some of the bubbling grievances in the Middle East, the world might look substantially different today.

A few things.

First, remember this New York Times placed op-ad, "Uncle oSAMa Wants You!" that ran in the New York Times just before the invasion of Iraq? It's worth remembering.

Second, tomorrow night -- Wednesday -- catch my colleague Peter Bergen's brilliant two hour CNN special, "In the Footsteps of bin Laden."

It airs at 9 pm and 12 midnight eastern time. Christiane Amanpour narrates the thought-provoking and educational documentary. Peter Bergen's book that inspired this film production is The Osama bin Laden I Know: An Oral History of al Qaeda's Leader.

For those who did not catch it, Ezra Klein did a nice job in this Los Angeles Times oped building on a previous blogpost here on TWN.

More soon.

I invade a man's home. He flails about, shooting everyone in the house in an attempt to kill me. I escape. Who is the enemy here, me or the idiot that did far more damage trying to stop me? The CNN special on Bin Laden touts the tag line "Know Your Enemy". Bush's reaction to 9/11, his ineptitude, incompetence and xenophobia have done infinitely more damage to the U.S. than Bin Laden. His response has been ruinous. Bush is the enemy. I don't need to watch CNN to know that.

Bin Laden isn't even wanted for 9/11 by the FBI. See for your self. http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/fugitives/laden.htm

And don't bother calling them and asking why bin Laden hasn't been prosecuted for 9/11 they wont answer your questions.

CIA disbands Bin laden unit
Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington
Tuesday July 4, 2006
The Guardian

Nearly five years after George Bush vowed to bring Osama bin Laden to justice "dead or alive", it's the end of the line for the CIA's Alec Station, the unit dedicated to the hunt for the al-Qaida leader.

The unit, named after the son of a counter-terror official, was disbanded last year, it emerged this week, and its agents reassigned in what intelligence officials described as a recognition of the changing nature of al-Qaida.

bin Laden is the least of our worries.

Dead or alive or where ever he is he must be laughing his head off...he won.

One "criminal" attack and he got the US to destroy itself...he doesn't have to lift another finger, his job is done.

Posted by vachon Aug 22, 8:07PM - Link

I'm going to agree with Carroll. binLaden's number two was roundly ignored by Hezbollah after he tried to attach himself to their cause. Their silence was the best rebuke possible.

I had this small debate over at Douglas Farrah's blog concerning "chicken and egg" root causes to suicide bombers. It's my theory that Islamic terrorist recruiters start with the already suicidal or on the edge suicidal to begin with. I look at the sheer numbers of mentally ill young people here in the US, kids who not only have everything to live for but access to an enormous amount of medical and emotional assistance. Yet they still attempt and many times succeed at killing themselves. They are still a mystery to us.

Combine this near epidemic of the mentally ill suicidal with a culture of spiritual and cultural death, sometimes at a very young age and the issue of Islamic terrorism becomes unstoppable. In short, I think we are ignoring the primary root cause of suicide bombers. Stopping the death culture is just as important, but lets get rid of the vulnerable fodder by identifying and helping the mentally ill suicidal. We owe it to them and we owe it to ourselves.

Excellent article by Ezra, Steve. Lots of political wisdom there. Too bad Kos is so tough on her. I wonder if he's in there helping Ned now that Ned actually has to run.

vachon: "chicken and egg" [snip] It's my theory that Islamic terrorist recruiters start with the already suicidal or on the edge suicidal to begin with.

Do you even have any data whatsoever on kids in the ME who are "already suicidal or on the edge suicidal to begin with"?

Do you even have any data whatsoever on kids in the ME?

Carroll: bin Laden is the least of our worries. Dead or alive or where ever he is he must be laughing his head off...he won.

Well, that debatable.

As you know, Saddam Hussein is a Sunni, albeit an a-la-carte-Sunni.

Now that he's gone the Shiites are in control of basically the Persian Gulf.

That is not good for the Sunnis.

This could lead to a long long battle for dominance in the ME region.

Sad to think that this long long battle is what Americans and the world get in return for the horrific attacks of 9/11 which were done by Sunnis.

9/11 + Iraq = Bush's fundamentalist Mid East

WTF?

I was in the market today and noticed a tabloid. I can't recall the name of the paper, but I do recall under the name it said....

"The World's Only Reliable Newspaper"

You can imagine my immediate relief when I saw the headline......

"OSAMA CAPTURED BY REDNECKS!"

Reading what little was exposed, as the paper was folded and in a rack partially covered by a Good Housekeeping magazine, I was able to glean the information that a band of Missouri red necks had captured Osama, mid-state.

Thank God, for surely I will rest easier tonight knowing that my absolute conviction that he was hiding in my attic was unfounded. Tomorrow I fully intend to completely remove all the duct tape I had protecting me and my loved ones. And it will be damned nice exiting the house via the front door instead of that damned chimney flue.

I am hoping this valuable information has been passed on to our esteemed President. I understand he has a severe paranoia about reading children's literature due to the trauma he experienced mid-way through "My Pet Goat".

But anyway, they got him. The tabloid says so. I am amazed Fox News hasn't picked up the story yet. Oh well, maybe after Karr they'll run it. after

Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States......

"He loves to cuss, gets a jolly when a mountain biker wipes out trying to keep up with him, and now we're learning that the first frat boy loves flatulence jokes. A top insider let that slip when explaining why President Bush is paranoid around women, always worried about his behavior. But he's still a funny, earthy guy who, for example, can't get enough of fart jokes. He's also known to cut a few for laughs, especially when greeting new young aides, but forget about getting people to gas about that."

Since the ceasefire, 4 Lebanese children have been killed by American made cluster bomblets. 21 have been wounded. There are reportedly TENS OF THOUSANDS of these unexploded bomblets littered throughout Lebanon.

I will try to keep you posted as the deaths pile up, for its plain to see you are really concerned about middle eastern kids, right?

No matter how you look at it, Osama has been on the lost and not found list almost as long as Ignorant George.

Posted by vachon Aug 23, 12:42PM - Link

Trust me, I would love to have reliable data on the mental health of children and young adults in the Middle East. That data is scarce and wholely unreliable. Which dictator wants it known that his kids are, erm, not well? The media is, how shall I say it, a wee bit biased.

I worked in the mental health field for many years. Still do in an observer sort of way. It ain't pretty out there for kids in the US. I can't imagine what it's like with limited or no resources and insane messages from spiriual advisors.

Posted by God Aug 23, 2:10PM - Link

Pissed Off American: Sure do. Wanna know how many Pal kids have been murdered by the Israelis?

Pissed Off American: for its plain to see you are really concerned about middle eastern kids, right?

You are DUMB: That is what is plain to see.

What is also plain to see is that you are **displacing** your anger toward the wrong person: So fuct you you turd-breath moron.

Of course I am concerned for ME kids.

I am greatly concerned with them hastily being labelled as "suicidal" without one of them ever even having been analysed.

Their plight, their individuality, and their suffering, is not something that I wish to be casually and hastily likened to or compared with that of suicidal kids in the USA.

The roots to the suicidality of kids in the ME needs to be carefully and sensitively recorded and acted upon.

This stuff needs to be respected and examined carefully before any theories as to why they are `suiciding' can be put forth.

We need data.

We do not need to de-humanize and de-individualize them by likening and comparing them to suicidal American kids.

That is why I am challenging vachon's theory and asking whether or not vachon even has any evidence for his/her theory.

Get it?

Asshole!
