Oh, and perhaps she is trying out for a job with the Bush administration and wants to demonstrate fluency in bush's native language.

A tough question? She was asked why about 20% of Americans can't locate America on a world map.

I will concede that you can make a case for nerves and stage fright but not a case that it was a tough question.

Easy points she could have hit in a short period of time:

1. We don't value geography enough in this country to teach it well, if at all.

2. The news in America is little more than a form of entertainment where Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton get more attention than world events making America geographically illiterate.

In the end, it's just really sad because it's all about stereotypes: smart women are ugly and pretty women are dumb. And it's a further indictment against beauty pageants.

Because "US Americans" don't have maps. That's the reason she gives. That isn't stage fright. That is utter cluelessness.

And she has no shame about her ignorance. She probably thinks she did a good job answering the question.

The clip doesn't indicate if there were audible groans from the audience. Why should there be? American exceptionalism is based on the myth that we are so powerful and perfect that we don't need to know about any other countries. To actually know geography and world culture means that you think those other places count - which is an attitude that shows you "hate America."

Of course, American exceptionalism can only exist because Americans are, in the majority, ignorant about other nations. If they ever find out how the rest of the modern industrialized world lives, they might get extremely angry and demand things like universal health care and mass transit.

She doesn't need a brain, her anatomy is perfectly suited to today's American values.

Actually, by saying "US Americans" she shows pretty good geography awareness. She understands that most Americans don't live in the USA.

This lady is qualified to be President! She is very reminiscent of candidate Bush, who could not even name the president of Pakistan in 2000. She would bring a fresh, attractive face to our public diplomacy. And she could woo the likes of Brown and Sarkozy, though Putin, Ahmadinejad and Merkel might be tougher. And who knows what amazing, new justifications she might create for our occupation of Iraq.

Too bad she's so young. Oh well, there's always 2024.

"Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.
Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding,” and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, “What do you think about that?” the report states.

She was so obviously nervous, we should give her a break. Even smart people's brains can shut down under nerves and pressure. These competitions are so stupid, the real criticism should come from our perpetuation of them.

It was a dumb answer, but I feel bad for her. Imagine how embarrassed she must be.

The question was not really that tough, but oh so poignant for the real problem Americans have in history/geography. She really didn't know. She should have responded honestly, instead of trying some really poor explanation.

I feel no sympathy for her.

What exactly is lewd conduct? This isn't something that just targets gay men is it? What if it were a man making the same lewd whatevers toward a female or visa versa? Anyone know?

The woman would have to be in the men's restroom, not vice-versa. In the latter case, the man would be hauled off to jail on some serious charges.
At a university I taught at recently, I heard a story about a guys' girlfriend going into the men's locker room and thence into the sauna, where she harangued him for something---this in front of several men with nothing except towels.
Nothing happened to her, but you can bet that I would be arrested if I went into the girls locker room 10 feet, let alone went to the sauna.
