Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

One of the Bush administration's toughest critics from the right has been Jim Pinkerton. Pinkerton is a friend, a New America Foundation colleague, a prolific opinion journalist, a Fox News commentator, and one of the most intelligent thinkers in Washington -- but he's just thrown me a bit of a curve ball.

Jim Pinkerton, in a note sent collectively to a head of a conservative DC think tank as well as to a former senior DoD official and me -- he disclosed that he was now officially "Senior Adviser" to the campaign of Mike Huckabee and that he hoped he could continue to work with us.

I will always work with Pinkerton. He may be the only top tier rationalist in Huckabee's firmament -- and I'll work with anyone to try and get the country on a better policy course. Pinkerton is not shy about the decision and believes in Huckabee -- though I sensed just a tiny bit of "don't be shocked that I am doing this. . ." in his note.

But Pinkerton's news reinforces my view that the debate about candidates ought not to be about ethereal characterizations of gut and identity -- but we should be debating proposals, debating the views and intentions of advisers, and debating past behavior and experience -- because these candidates are not individuals but rather "franchises" of often competing and internally discordant interests.

And in Pinkerton's case, he has just broadened the franchise of Mike Huckabee, and Huckabee hopefully knows the value of who he has just brought on board as Pinkerton enhances the policy heft of Huckabee's outfit perhaps more than one would have thought possible until this news.

Yeah, but does he believe in the Flintstones???

Look, if the guy believes the world is older than six thousand years, then he and 'ol Huckabible are gonna have problems.

I think it's very sad that anyone of Pinkerton's sort would give credence to Huckabee's campaign. It reminded me of this, from physics prof. Bob Parks' always informative (and always humorous) newsletter (Jan. 4), What's New (http://bobpark.physics.umd.edu/index.html):

"Ironically, on the day NAS [Natl. Academies of Science] released its report, Science, Evolution and Creationism, the Republican Caucus in Iowa was picking an avowed creationist to be their choice as the nominee for President of the United States. Could we have designed a worse procedure for selecting nominees for "leader of the free world"? The NAS report was intended to explain to the American people the absolute certainty of evolution, and the sheer foolishness of creationism. Asked on ABC Good Morning America if he thought creationism should be taught in the schools, he dodged, saying he favors education."

I can only hope Pinkerton educates Huckabee. For the sake of science, this has to be part of the public discussion.

Tsk, tsk. Me thinks there's the smell of 'payoff' wafting over the dank backwaters of the Potomac. The good Rev. Schuck-a-bee is now, allegedly, to be taken seriously? Not freaking likely. Pinkerton is discredited for your basic "Faux News" association. Mercy is there anyone in, near, or around Babylon-on-the-Potomac that won't sell him/herself for a buck?

Anyone of Pinkerton's sort?

Ladies and gentlemen I give you Jim Pinkerton:..christian neo cultist in the service of Jesus and Israel. A 1000 years Clash of Culture's Wur against the green peril that will take over the world and destroy chistendom. Yes ladies and gentlemen Jim has determined that the Muslim revolt against US meddling in the ME is just a cover for their real goal of eventual take over of the world in which christian and jewish monuments will be destroyed and replaced with statues of Allah.

The Once & Future Christendom

From death of the West—to knights of the West

by James P. Pinkerton

The Call of Duty—and Destiny

..snips...

"With apologies to the frankenfood-fearers and polar bear-sentimentalizers, the biggest danger we face is the Clash of Civilizations, especially as we rub against the “bloody borders” of Islam.

What if, in the coming century, we lose that clash—and the source of our civilization? What if Muslims take over Europe? What if “Eurabia” indeed comes to pass? Would Islamic invaders demolish the Vatican, as the Taliban dynamited Afghanistan’s Buddhas of Bamyan in 2001? Or would they settle merely for stripping the great cathedrals of Europe of all their Christian adornment, rendering them into mosques? And what if the surviving non-Muslim population of Europe is reduced to subservient “dhimmitude”?

It could happen. Many think it will. In July 2004, Princeton historian Bernard Lewis told Germany’s Die Welt that Europe would be Islamic by the end of this century"

...it gets even worse as you read on. Get a load of fellow racist nutcases like Melaine Phillips he quotes. I can't believe this guy is even listened to by people like Steve. Another strike against DC think tanks.

Which "franchise" will rid us of Rabbi Nazi Chertoff and the inmate run insane asylum known as Homeland Security?
That's the franchise I want to vote for.

This is such crapola...as if airplanes and federal buildings are the only things a terrier would blow up? Give me a break..send Chertoff and his fellow wannabe nazis back to Poland since they are so enthralled with re-creating a nazi state.

"Chertoff unveils new rules for driver's licenses

WASHINGTON — U.S. residents born after Dec. 1, 1964, will need to have new Homeland Security-approved drivers licenses by Dec. 1, 2014, if they want to use their ID to board an airplane or enter a federal building, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday.
Older drivers will have until 2017, he said.

The new rules do not require states to issue the new identification cards, but residents of states that do not participate will not be able to use their driver's licenses as proof of identity at federal agencies.

States that need more time to comply with the new rules must apply for a waiver if they want their licenses to remain valid after May 2008.

Congress directed Homeland Security to devise the new rules as part of the Real ID Act, passed in 2005.

Congress was responding to the 9/11 Commission Report, which identified weaknesses in national security that allowed the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Commission urged Congress to set nationwide standards for identification documents.

Chertoff says the new rules will make it harder for terrorists to slip past security checks, curb illegal immigration and reduce identity theft.

The rules prohibit states from issuing the new secure license to illegal immigrants.

States may issue other forms of identification to illegal immigrants, but they will not be valid for federal security use. "This kind of identification gives us a tremendous tool in preventing dangerous people from getting on airplanes or getting into federal buildings," Chertoff says. "Second, secure identification happens to be a very good way to prevent illegal immigrants from pretending to be American citizens so they can work illegally in this country."

To comply with the new rules, states must design licenses that include embedded security features set by Homeland Security and digital photographs.

Personal data, such as Social Security numbers and immigration status, will be checked against federal databases to root out fraud.

Chertoff says his department reviewed more than 21,000 comments from citizens, states and organizations before finalizing the rules.

Some civil liberties groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, have opposed national standards as a violation of privacy.

States have complained that the federal rules will be costly and difficult to implement and 17 states have passed legislation objecting to the REAL ID Act.

The new ID program "will not only lead to long lines at every DMV across the country, it will impose a massive unfunded mandate on state governments while offering absolutely no federal privacy protections to our citizens," says Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who has introduced legislation that would repeal the driver's license provision. "It is difficult to think this is anything but the first, big step toward a national identification card."

Homeland Security estimates say revamping drivers licenses nationwide will cost states $3.9 billion."

WOW!!!! I just read Pinkerton's whole rant, alluded to by Carroll....

Good Lord Steve, change hallucinigens, someone is sellin' ya bad acid.

Posted by student Jan 12, 3:51PM - Link

I just read it all too, and I thought it was very smart and only slightly demented. I'm basically a leftist, but I'm somewhat open to the right-wing truism that There Are Some People Out There Who Just Want To Kill You, because, I dunno, maybe they do. Some people are strange that way.

As usual with Pinkerton, I'm not convincedexcept, maybe, that Tolkien is more substantive than I had thought but I'm intrigued. I'd certainly like to see him try to defend his thesis against Bob Wright on a long segment on Bloggingheads.

Holy Smokes! I just read the link above from POA too. The guy is scary. I kept waiting for the part of the essay where he says "OK, now that I've outlined what the crazy people think, on to my rational argument...."

Posted by jim2445 Jan 12, 4:48PM - Link

Since when did being crazy, serially wrong or simply stupid disqualify you from being taken seriously by other Washington insiders? Once you have attained a certain level of exposure you become "respected" no matter how bad your analysis was, is, or becomes.

Look at John Bolton who is all of the above. If he were less of an ass he could be the next William Safire. He certainly has the background.

The Op-Ed pages, Think Tanks, Faux News, and politically appointments (including Cabinet Level) are where loyal foot soldiers fester no matter how loathsome. After reading the Mr Pinkerton's Christianist ravings I am sure he will continue to fester successfully.

He had better bring a gigantic tube of lipstick for his new pig.

Posted by Carroll Jan 12, 5:17PM - Link

Pinkerton reminds me of that other little pasty looking midget...the short guy whose name I can't think of but was a big christian lobbist. They all base their arguements on the bible or use some work of fiction to illustrate their thinking...which is probably fitting since their thinking is mostly fictional.

Notable quotes from Pinkerton:

Pinkerton: The media "like brown people" and "black people," but "what they really dislike, of course, is white people"

"In times of war, the instinct is to trust dad more than mom, said James Pinkerton,

Hurricane victims are "whining all the time on TV to get more federal money." [9/19/05]

Why is it damp palm fops like Pinkerton are the ones who always exhibit such a hate of muslims, blacks, browns, women, everyone basically but their own cult.

I'm a little curious, Steve......

Have you ever pondered the character of someone that would agree to work for Fox News? Or is being a Propagandist now considered an honorable calling?

I have an idea. Why not invite Pinkerton over to do a guest blog about how "fair and balanced" Fox News is?

JIM PINKERTON: "...it is yet to be shown that we can win a war against an adversary with this media climate and culture in terms of reportage -- what can be leaked, what can be revealed."

ERIC BURNS (HOST): "Quickly, do you fault the media for this?"

CAL THOMAS: "Yes. Say yes."

JIM PINKERTON: "If we lose the war, that would be bad."

NEIL GABLER: "But what if we lose our civil liberties?"

JIM PINKERTON: "Well, I'd rather lose our civil liberties than lose the war."

CAL THOMAS: "Amen."

ROFLMAO!!!

I guess Pinkerton has pretty well scrubbed his own blog of past posts. It woulda been interesting to have checked out his blog before he linked up with Huckawacko.

It would be interesting too, to hear Pinkerton explain why "ThePinkertonFiles" seems to have been scrubbed off the internet.

Ok, I'm bored with it. Sorry if I got carried away.

I wonder, does it terrify anyone else that two wackjobs like Pinkerton and Huckanut can get together and actually entertain the goal of gaining access to the throne? And even more terrifying, actually have a following of fans?

God help us.

(Unless, of course, you're the God these two nuts commune with.)

POA,

Totally agree. It scares me that Bush was elected and has been President--and that there is a possibility even of having anyone with similar beliefs succeed Bush!

Forget Huckabee, McCain is the frontrunner. How come no media is covering McCain's racist remarks during the SC debate? John McCain was overtly racist in the SC debate, read it here:
http://www.nolanchart.com/article1084.html
Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation.

A fall 2008 match would be

Obama 60% Huckacide 40% It would be really, really bad. I mean really bad.

Or

Clinton 52% Huckacide 48% Bad. Really bad.

The world knows Huckabee used to be a Baptist preacher. I have absolutely nothing against Baptist preachers mind you, but does anyone in America really think the Arabs will sit down with Preacher Prez Huckabee? And if not, can anyone name three implications from not sitting down... ( like world war THREE)
Huckabee is the opposite of our opponent's battles..... theocracy.

I think the Arabs are more likely to sit down with a Huckabee then Huckabee is to sit down with them.
