Charging RINO: The Latest on Bolton

Reuters' write-up of the most recent Bolton events is a fairly good one, both as a wrap-up of the Sunday shows and as a decent overview of where things stand overall. I must say, I was disheartened at the half-hearted opposition of Democratic senators today: both Dodd on "Fox News Sunday" (write-up here, transcript here) and Lieberman on "Late Edition" (transcript here) seemed basically resigned to the fact that Bolton will get a recess appointment, and neither took the opportunity to bring up the new revelations about Bolton's failure to disclose to the Foreign Relations Committee that he was interviewed by the State Department's inspector general back in 2003.
All reports seem to point toward a recess appointment for Bolton sometime during the early part of the week, prior to President Bush's departure for Crawford on Tuesday. Since there have been a great many questions about the use of the recess appointment power, its history and so forth, I wanted to pass along this from MSNBC, which I've found very useful for background throughout this process.
I'm not going to size up the many ramifications of a recess appointment yet... the deed is not done, and there will be ample time for discussion after the fact if and when the president takes that step. For now, we cannot let up: we must make perfectly clear that no member of the Senate, Republican or Democrat, Bolton proponent or opponent, should sit quietly by and let a presidential nominee get away with submitting an untruthful disclosure form to the Senate. "I forgot" is hardly an adequate defense for such a serious omission, and no senator, no American, should be satisfied with it.
In the next couple of days, we should finally have a resolution to this months-long saga. Regardless of the final outcome, all of us who have opposed this ill-chosen nominee should remember that we have stood for truth, for honor, for reform, and for the best interests of America and our relations with the world.

With Iran starting its uranium enrichment again, and the matter destined to be soon taken up in the UN Security Council, Bolton will be said to be needed more than ever as soon as possible as his no-nonsense self, and we'll all get to see right away Bolton in action on a volitile issue that's right up his alley. Will he be baited and go ballistic? Probably not, since the Europeans will have little choice than to go along with sanctions after having been snubbed by Iran and Bolton shouting at them "I told you wusses what would happen!" Bolton's going prime-time right off the bat to show us why Bush wanted this tough guy man's man to lead the UN in the righteous course the US has set out for the rest of humanity. America (and Israel), Fuck Yeah! GOD BLESS AMERICA.
Who cares what the UN Security Council thinks about the Iranian nuclear program? I don't. The UN is often on the side of the terrorists so why should we expect or care if the help the USA dismantle the Iranian nuclear program?
The UN was totally in bed with Saddam Hussein and Iraq. If any individual countries want to help us with the Iran security problem - then fine - but the UN is worse than neutral, it is a hindrance.
So I hope Bolton throws as big of a wrench as he possibly can into the UN. I hope that place rots. Whatever Bolton does do, it won't be enough.
Robert, Robert, Robert!
Really becoming a softy are yah?! Bomb the holy god damnned hell out of Iran! Tomorrow! And send Bolton recess appointed to the UN Wednesday to say, "Fuck all of you, get the hell out of the Greatest country on the face of the Earth, you filthy pieces of human scum! How dare you question our righteous obliteration of Evil in the service of the One True God!"
GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!
From the Reuters' article: "It would have been better had he been confirmed," Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl told CNN. "But under the circumstances, everybody at the U.N. will know that he's the president's man."
Yes, everyone will know he's the president's man. Not the United States' representative to the UN, but the president's.

isn't lying under oath to a congressional committee a criminal offense?
and if there's strong evidence that Bolton did indeed lie, isn't there an obligation on the part of the federal prosecutor in the Dictrict to investigate and enforce the law?
Democrat Senator, Chris ("Man for all seasons") Dodd, says John Bolton “lacks support” for that U.N. post.
Really?
Hmm.
Well, I was saddled with the albatross of having attended the New York public school system, but even I’m able to count and to divide by 100. And when the motion to invoke cloture on John Bolton’s nomination came up in the Senate, a couple of months ago, a grand total of 56 U.S. Senators said “yea.” If Bolton really lacked the necessary support of the Upper Chamber to be seated at the U.N., then the Democrats simply could have allowed an ensuing floor vote. But they chose to block that vote instead.
Lieberman is just a republican in democrats clothing, but that isn't as bad as it may seem, as the democrats are no shining example of an opposition party at all.
They are just the other side of a dirty coin. It is time that we got all of the bought and paid for politicians out of Washington, make lobbying (bribery) illegal, and put a cap on election spending. That is the only way that we are going to get back the government for the people and not one for the corporations.
Otherwise we get the same old, same old, as we continue to swirl around the bowl to the inevitable conclusion.
One thing about a diplomatic institution, you have to be able to practice diplomacy in order to accomplish anything. On that basis alone Mr. Bolton was a horribly misguided choice. The UN has been around for over half a century and enjoys wide-spread international support. It will far outlast the current administration and it's policies. The UN can afford to tread water and wait if necessary. I'm sure Mr. Bolton will be treated nicely enough but will be essentially ignored once he begins to bluster and threaten. He will accomplish next to nothing in his tenure and will be little more than a seat-warmer. If he is lucky someone might give him directions to the restroom...
Jayson amd foolmeins points are salient.
Jayson because he's willing to throw away what the founding father's fought for (government by the consent of the people) for "tyrnanny of the majority" - i know... the NY city school albatross thing, and he can only count to 100.
Foolmeins because he reminds us that our founding fathers thought political parties would be America's downfall. It was even thought improper to campaign for oneself, rather than have the support come bottoms up. Once politicians banded together to form a "tyrnany of the majority" and represented party interests (pure power) rather than act as an agent for ALL their consituents (well, at least white, propertied males) America would eventually be doomed. They were right. We now have government by smear and propaganda, whose main function is to ealth from the many to the few. In that sense, two political parties are just marginally better than one, and for all practical purposes, the results are identical.
Well, Rove or his minions are confirming a Bolton recess nomination today. The Veruca Salt administration in full effect.
I did not see the Sunday talk shows. However, it is difficult to be outraged about a Bolton recess appointment if it has not yet happened.
NPR just announced the appointment. Well, at least he's been pretty much defanged. Thanks for fighting the good fight for all of us, Mr. Clemons.
What a sad, misguided choice for UN ambassador. Bolton's appointment is another major policy blunder by this administration on many levels (as Steve and others have pointed out-repeatedly). Remember, the bottom line is this guy couldn't be confirmed by a majority in the Senate, even though the majority party controls both the legislative and executive branches of government. He was voted out of committee without a recommendation. He lied to the Senate. He's being investigated by the IG. He manipulates intelligence to fit his personal policy goals. And from all accounts, he's simply an asshole, too.
Bolton does not deserve the privilege of representing me (or our country) at the UN.
Would it be under Fitzgerald's mandate to include an indictment against Bolton for perjury charges? If this might be possible, could someone suggest this to Dems on the judiciary committee to write a letter?
So these jerks are gonna put him through anyway. Fine, I think this has the potential to end up working to our advantage. Bolton is a dirty SOB that seems to relish playing dirty. Obviously we have no proof at this point he was invovled in the Plame thing, but ya gotta think if there was dirty work to be done for Cheney and the crew, this guy wanted in on the action. Now we know the memo detailing Plame's identity came from State. You know mr. stache wanted that info and most likely got it. We know he got NSA intercepts that they dont' want us to see. We know there are other people besides Rove and Libby talking about Plame to reporters, etc. This guy has to be linked into this somewhere, becuase you know he and Libbby are Cheney's men and want to please the boss. Additionally, no ones "forgets" that they are being questioned in a criminal probe of national importance. So, he lied to congress.
Thus, we have an abysmal pick to begin with. A fool at best, liar at worst, as our UN rep and someone who is probably going to end up neck deep in this Plame mess. The knives are going to be out at State and some pissed off people are going to enjoy dropping the dime on him. Put it all out there for Joe six pack to put together and realize what a bunch of crooks and liars this crew is because this guy represents all of what they stand for.
"Which one of you simpletons said that I was no Adlai Stevenson?"™
So Yosemite Sam is going to the UN via the back door is he? ... I predict he will prove 2 b an embarrassment to the US.
Once ur the butt of jokes its over for any diplomat. And u'll pardon the repost:
Being a non-American observer, I don't see what the fuss over Bolton is all about. He epitomizes the Bush administration to a T, and he does have one thing going for him: He has great resemblance to Yosemite Sam.
The NRA will provide the proper hardware, I'm sure, and with both guns ablaze, or whilst pounding his shoes on the podium ala Nikita Khrushchev (and with, I suspect, perhaps a dose of Zoloft or whatever) he should straighten out all the ills of world at the United Nations just fine, thank you.
'Tis a pity Bush I & II didn't send him to single-handedly tackle Saddam before this and the other war started out.
