Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

Well, it seems that too many bloggers applauded too loudly in favor of Hastert's initial call for Dreier to succeed Tom DeLay -- and now have selected House Majority Whip Roy Blunt to succeed the indicted DeLay.

Dreier will get to play part-time helm-holder these next few months though in a special deal cut with Hastert and Blunt.

DeLay is still out -- very out, and that is great.

the blogosphere finally flexes it muscles.

My views on Ronnie Earle:

Earle is a partisan Democrat, but not everything he does is partisan. Sure, he wants to stick it to Delay and the Republicans, but if the Republicans have committed crimes then they deserve to be prosecuted.
Is Delay guilty or innocent? I do not know. But I do suggest for conservatives to not dismiss immediately everything Earle does.
I love the TAB Texas Association of Business. I agree with their political views 100%. But it sure seems the TAB broke election law in 2002 and if they did, the guilty ones need to pay for it. -- Robert

It was interesting to listen to the cable news anchors explain why Dreier was selected to be a "helper" rather than Majority Leader. Blitzer stated that Dreier was pro choice and from southern California; then dropping his voice he faltered a bit and said there were also "other things."

Republicans are quite adamant about repudiating those "other things." Maybe Dreier should think this over.

Drier is out because he's out.

Tom DeLay. I sure do agree with him on so many issues except that he and Bush spend money like drunken sailors. But I'll take them over Democrats who spend it like crack addicts.

In Texas, there is a law that forbids corporate money from being directly given to political candidates, such as state representatives. The TAB is a business PAC here in Texas that got a lot of corporate money and did NOT directly put it into the coffers of candidates.
Instead TAB sent money to Tom DeLay's PAC and then DeLay's PAC sent it BACK to Texas directly into the campaigns of state representatives.
So it appears to the uninformed person that corporations gave money to TAB which gave it to DeLay's PAC which funneled it into several state representative campaigns.
It looks illegal to me. So if anyone broke the law, they need to pay the legal price if they knowingly broke the law. Also, remember those accused are political sophisticated people with access to fancy, high rent lawyers that are supposed to keep them legal.
Who is guilty of what? I don't know. That is what we have courts for.

If you are down about DeLay being indicted, there is yet room to cheer, Err America continues its implosion. I guess the demographics of people who want to listen to hours of talk radio that wants to TAX them and tell them Bush is EVIL, just aren't too good:

Robert Morrow,

You might have a hard time proving, with real figures, that Dems outspend Repubs. That's not the experience of the last 4 administrations. Are you still mad at FDR?

Posted by mc Sep 28, 6:53PM - Link

The Republicans are handing it to the Democrats on a silver platter. DeLay, Rove, Frist, Abramoff-the list of corrupt Republicans and their "associates" under investigation grows daily, it seems. And Robert, don't give me this "alledgedly corrupt" crap. The stench coming out of the GOP is worse than the floodwaters of New Orleans.

Democrats have to keep hitting the Republicans on their criminal leadership. And when the Dems knock them down, hit 'em again to make sure they stay down. If the Dems ever want to when elections again, they have to prove they can fight, and fight hard. Because if they can't beat the Republicans, then they'll never beat the terrorists. It wasn't values that lost the last election for the Dems, it was because they're perceived as pussies (not the best term, I know, but I ain't apologizing!)

Pelosi hit 'em pretty good today. Dean keeps punching, and even Bubba got in a few licks last week. They gotta keep it up. When we take back Congress, then we can prove we know how to govern. The 2006 campaign, however, has started and to win, we need to remind everybody that the Republican Party is run by criminals who use government to enrich themselves and their enablers.

How can there be any doubt in anybody's mind that these guys have no clue how to govern? Bush's legacy: 1,900 dead in Iraq for a lie and tax cuts for the rich.

Good grief.

Wonder how Drier feels to know he's been stung by the anti-gay discrimination he fights to preserve?

Steve -- can't we attract a smart troll? The one we've got doesn't really challenge the conversation -- just says stupid things.

The first take on Dreier stepping in was that he was a placeholder for Delay's return; that Blunt "would have" been a real replacement.

Since Blunt wound up with the job after all, does that mean the GOP doesn't believe Delay will return to the leadership position?

If so, does that mean the GOP is fairly certain Delay will be convicted?

Silly me...that's win, not when. You proof-read and you proof-read and still...

This is just a joke I'm not getting, right Steve? You aren't seriously suggesting the blogosphere had anything significant to do with this, are you?
