Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

Steve Clemons, Steve Coll & Peter Bergen on Pakistan

Steve Clemons, Steve Coll and Peter Bergen discuss Pakistani stability, US foreign policy, Musharraf's waning power and Bhutto's assassination.

A loyal, anonymous reader just sent me these two important Tom DeLay quotes -- directed at then President Bill Clinton during his legal scuffles.

Tom DeLay (R-Texas), quoted in the Washington Post, October 9, 1998:
I believe that this nation sits at a crossroads. One direction points to the higher road of the rule of law. Sometimes hard, sometimes unpleasant, this path relies on truth, justice and the rigorous application of the principle that no man is above the law.

Now, the other road is the path of least resistance. This is where we start making exceptions to our laws based on poll numbers and spin control. This is when we pitch the law completely overboard when the mood fits us, when we ignore the facts in order to cover up the truth.

Shall we follow the rule of law and do our constitutional duty no matter unpleasant, or shall we follow the path of least resistance, close our eyes to the potential lawbreaking, forgive and forget, move on and tear an unfixable hole in our legal system? No man is above the law, and no man is below the law. That's the principle that we all hold very dear in this country.

Tom DeLay (R-Texas, quoted from Late Edition, CNN, November 29, 1998:

I think it would be a travesty to the Constitution for us to lower the standards for breaking the law by not voting impeachment. It boggles my mind people would think that committing a felony is not impeachable, and therefore, I think the members, by conscience, will vote for impeachment.

Rule of law. Checks and balances. Healthy civil society.

Tom DeLay used to talk this talk. . .

Restoring the Republic depends on shutting down the Tom DeLay political machine. And those who fed off his brand of structural corruption in Washington need to be exposed and purged.

I saw Tom Delay late this evening as he was walking into the Hall of the States building just off Capitol Hill. He did not look like he had had a good day and looking into the glum visages of his entourage I'm sure my smile didn't add to the fun. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword. Or as Confucius put it, "What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others." Too late Tom. For the moment ... justice has been meted.

I believe you're missing a closing bold tag: the rest of the page is bold after the "Rule of law." paragraph.

Just so you know.

now it starts,

we have frist in the dock, and now delay, next comes, let us hope, rove...wouldn't that be an incredible threesome ?

the sleaze factor is bubbling up...

the "liberal" controlled media is already putting out moves to tamp all of this down, and just "let the legal process take its course"...

and of course bush is hovering at 40% approval so he has no game right now.

advice to all democratic front runners, sit back, let this shit digest, and above all, allow the repubs the space and oxygen to start turning against each other...this is already happening, but we haven't even begun to see how vicious the internal war is about to become...let them start eating their own.

as napolean said, when your enemy is making a mistake, don't interrupt.

And just as much as I disagree with your position and techniques in the previous thread, I strongly support you here.

Perhaps DeLay will be found guilty. What then? If he actually gets jail time George will probably pardon him. And as for the rest of the GOP scandals which abound, does anyone actually think that the Republican majority Congress will investigate? Hate to sound like a pessimist but........

I agree with Audrey, it is the worst thing on
earth...to have a country ruled by one party..
especially a party that is as dishonest as this
one. I don't listen to a speech any day..without
there being a lie in it.
Watch come o f the documentaries you can get now,
Bush lies his ass off in every speech to this
nation....during the run up to this war in Iraq.
