Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

Steve Clemons, Steve Coll & Peter Bergen on Pakistan

Steve Clemons, Steve Coll and Peter Bergen discuss Pakistani stability, US foreign policy, Musharraf's waning power and Bhutto's assassination.

TWN hopes everyone is preparing for a safe and fun New Year's Eve.

I'm back in Washington and headed to Philadelphia for the next couple of days. I just learned that I'll be going to Saudia Arabia on January 5th for a few days and any insights appreciated.

The best news this morning is that the deal that fell apart last night between feuding Yemeni tribes and the Yemen government came back together, and the Chrobog family has been reportedly released.

That's good news -- enough for the moment.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but who gives a @#&#^ about your travels? Especially since you post it right next to a request to make a donation. If you can afford to travel to Europe, to Saudia Arabia, to Philadelphia (Philadelphia?), good for you, but don't ask the rest of the world to help support your foot-loose habit.

We're much more interested in the Chrobog family's travails than your travels.

Leigh -- I have written about nearly all the trips I take, and these trips are NOT paid for by donations to this blog. I travel when I am invited to speak or attend a conference, and some of these trips and conferences inform what I write.

But your note is mean-spirited and not appreciated this New Year's Eve. I think that this blog is not for you -- and frankly, this blog is mine. . .and I make the rules. If you aren't interested, move on. It's as simple as that. I will continue to write about what I am doing and thinking -- and where I may be going.

I will also write about the Chrobogs -- who are friends -- because it was what I chose to do. I'm glad you were interested.

But seriously, lighten up -- or really, don't visit.

best,

Steve Clemons

Sounds like jealousy to me. But having flown 100,000 miles a year (domestically) I know what hard work it is. And how your meetings provide information that I enjoy learning.

Thanks for a great 2005 and the best of 2006 to you and the TWN crowd.

Steve....

the rest of us appreciate your efforts, and realize that when you ask for donations to support TWN, the money goes to TWN, and not to support the fabulous lifestyle exemplified by your profligacy in driving up I-95 for two and a half hours to wallow in the bacchalian excesses of New Years in Philadelphia.

Say hi to Paris, Donald, Ariana, Katie, and Maria & Arnold for us -- I understand that they too will be abandoning Vail, Gstaadt, Aruba, and the French Riviera to participate in the "jet-set only" festivities for which the City of Brotherly Love is justly famous (or notorious!)

Have a great New Year!

Best wishes and success in the New Year. You're doing a great job getting us to
* THINK seriously about issues important to our democracy and what is happening in the world; and
* ACT appropriately.

It's unfortunate that Leigh-character expressed nasty sentiments steming probably from a naive view of world mechanics. Then again, as dons blog suggests, jealousy might have something to do with it.

I like the new look. I like to hear about your travels. I love your dog. I even like what I read. If it's over my head (which, I've convinced myself it just means it is out of my areas of interest) I will do more research in order to learn more about it. I do this even if I'm not exactly excited about the topic/issue. Gee, I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. Happy New Year and many Happy Travels.

Gads, and I thought I was pissed off!

I wrote about this topic before, when I found out too late that you were speaking in Iowa about 90 miles from where I live. I repeat: I would like to know if you are speaking in my neck of the woods, and I am sure there are other readers who feel the same way. So keep us posted.

Happy New Year to Steve and his readers, whose posts seem to be mostly written by bright and thoughtful people with a common interest in making the world better.

A very Happy New Year to you, Steve, and many thanks for your thoughtful, fascinating blog!

That's great news about the Chroborgs, too.
