I'm up at the Woodrow Wilson School today at Princeton University through tomorrow.

Will post tomorrow morning, but until then -- by popular demand -- another Oakley picture and an open thread.

Six months ago.....

"Why don't you put the National Guard on the border to back up the border patrol and stop the bleeding, and then start to increase the Border Patrol, the high-tech and all of that?" O’Reilly asked. . . .

"Well, the National Guard is really, first of all, not trained for that mission," Chertoff told O'Reilly. "I mean, the fact of the matter is the border is a special place. There are special challenges that are faced there."

Chertoff added that that it would take a huge amount of National Guard troops, that they would need new training. But couldn’t the National Guard pull it off, O'Reilly asked?

"I think it would be a horribly over-expensive and very difficult way to manage this problem," Chertoff said. "Unless you would be prepared to leave those people in the National Guard day and night for month after month after month, you would eventually have to come to grips with the challenge in a more comprehensive way."

(Good lord, are these assholes for real??? Throw this bunch of buffoons in prison before they kill a few hundred thousand of us with their criminal bullshit)

Either this is a joke, or the greatest example of cognitative dissonance ever to appear in print...

Reliance on faulty polls pushes Bush popularity ratings downward
By John Adams

Since Democrats are never likely to agree that Bush or any other Republican is doing a good job, we should focus on the other 500. If 30-plus percent of the total of 1,000 feel that the president is doing a good job that means that more than 60 percent of the 500 non-Democrats feel he is doing a good job.

[CUT]

Given the current climate of hate whipped up by Democratic operatives, it is understandable if Republican voters prefer to lie low. If interviewed by pollsters, they may well choose to waffle rather than express a firm commitment. But when it comes to Election Day, they will vote Republican, no matter how displeased they may be at a given moment. Republicans tend to be less emotional than Democrats, which translates into greater loyalty to their party. Their half of the 50-50 divide is likely to remain firm.
So even if we take the polls at face value, when you include the wafflers Bush's support is probably 80 percent or more of the non-Democrats. He obviously needs to get closer to 100 percent, but 80 percent isn't too shabby when you consider the pounding he takes day after day in the media. It is clear that he has much more support and remains much more popular in the country than the polls indicate.

I agree with John Adams,
There are no independants in the electorate any more. The country is split evenly 50-50 between Dems and Repubs; no one is able to sit on the fence in these divisive times where the choices are starkly defined. No one really has a choice in this country. Republicans, in the end, will vote 100% for a Republican, not an effeminate, homo, baby killing, un-American socialist. And Democrats will 100% vote for a Democrat not the party of war criminal liars with corruption coming out of their ears that should land them all in jail. The elections will come down to getting out the vote with hot button issues, and fraud in the voting booth. Also, all the dirt culled from spying will destroy the Dems and they will be on their heels throughout the campaign reacting to barrages of blows. Dems will never learn to start the fight and never stop. Dems are too effeminate to win this game.

Times like this, I have to question my own sanity...
John Adams is making sense to you guys?

First off, he says you can't believe the polls because it only sampled 1,000 people instead of 270 million. So, he's essentially discounting the idea of sampling: that polling a random selection gives us some idea of the whole. I remember seeing an interview with the people who ran amihotornot, and they said they noticed that after a certain number of votes, no one's rating changed. Once a certain number have responded, increasing the sample size doesn't do much good (I believe in politics you want a sample of around 800).

Then, he says that since Democrats will never like Bush anyway, we can simply lop off half the people polled. Bush had a 90 percent approval rating at one point, so Democrats are certainly capable of supporting a Republican President. Irregardless, there's still the tiny little problem that, Diebold not withstanding, Democrats can still vote. Discounting them does not make Bush popular. By his math, the only Presidents with a disapproval rating were Truman (with a dismal 44 percent) and Nixon (46). At his low point, Carter had a whopping 56 percent approval - not too shabby!

But even by his own distorted math and creative calculations Adams makes quite a leap. By discounting half the electorate, Bush still only has about a 60 percent approval rating, so, he just calls that 80. Fatigue, you see. Those Bush supporters are just so plum tuckered out defending their boy king that they're just taking a breather.

This, my dear friends, is what you call a rationalization.

I hope Oakdude is wearing sunscreen and he should really have a hat on and some shades. A Pepsi would go nicely. Oh, and can you get some nachos while you're up?

Adams sounds eeriely reminiscing of this part of Colbert's speech at the White House Correspondence Dinner in how he is rationalizing Bush's numbers.

Sir, pay no attention to the people who say the glass is half empty, because 32% means it's 2/3 empty. There's still some liquid in that glass is my point, but I wouldn't drink it. The last third is usually backwash.

. . .

So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't.

Steve: What on earth is going on with the SEC investigation of Bill Frist? Has it been quietly discontinued? How come we haven't heard a thing about it in months?

^^^ HELP IMPEACH TODAY

Keep the pressure on Congress... Talking about impeachment wakes people up... They question, it's a strong motivator to get people thinking. It also lets Congress know how intense the dissapproval is for this President... They seem to be a little slow on the uptake. So please:

1) Sign petitions if you have not done so
2) Send a letter to Congress (both Senators & House rep)
3) Send a copy to the media
4) Enlist friends and family to help, ask them to chip in time
5) Spread the link around, email it (with a request to forward) post it on a blog, or in the comments of a news story.

Help out!!!

Thanks :)
