A few commenters and those who have emailed have taken exception to my stating where I am during my travels at the moment.

I state where I am because I like to meet TWN readers in the cities I visit. I attended conferences in Europe this past week -- and am now about to start some vacation -- during which Dave Meyer will be the MC of The Washington Note.

But to those of you who just don't like to hear where I am -- or my mentioning the cities -- this blog may not be for you. I'll be meeting some of my readers in Mykonos today. Vancouver on Friday and Saturday. Alaska next.

More later.

-- Steve Clemons

Steve,

Keep up the traveling and detais of where you are and when! We need you on the road, engaging with the world, developing your sources and reporting back.

Steve, I love hearing about your travels. Keep it up. There are always some people that complain about everything.

Posted by Vierge, May 30 2006, 8:21AM - Link

I hate hearing it because envy consumes me. I hate what I've become and what will surely be my continuing fate. Loser, going nowhere fast.

Posted by linda, May 30 2006, 8:25AM - Link

oy, you've got some prickly readers.

the more informed americans of your caliber engaging in an exchange of ideas, the better. esp if you aren't affiliated with this horrible administration. safe travels.

Posted by Cathy, May 30 2006, 8:59AM - Link

I agree with Vierge, they're just green with envy because they don't get to do worthwhile things.

Better get back to mine!

Posted by Pissed Off American, May 30 2006, 9:21AM - Link

Why in God's name would they get pissed off at you describing your travels, when they could be so much more gainfully pissed off by your mincing of words and the constant political cow-towing you engage in??????

Hehehe....just kidding....ummmm...I think.

Posted by Punchy, May 30 2006, 9:52AM - Link

Why are people upset at you announcing your schedule?? Wha?

Posted by notway, May 30 2006, 10:09AM - Link

Don't just tell us, give us some pictures.

Posted by Hehehe, May 30 2006, 10:22AM - Link

POA may as well have posted what Vierge did. Hit a nerve, didn't it, PO?

Posted by Carroll, May 30 2006, 11:04AM - Link

I have to agree with Steve on this...quibbling over personal "observations and opinions" on anything but the really big stuff is silly...and there are too many valid points on both sides of the Mt. Everest arguement to make anyone 100% right on it anyway.

Posted by fiat lux, May 30 2006, 11:36AM - Link

I could understand readers thinking you should not discuss your travels out of concern for your safety, but readers who think you should not discuss them becasue they're too trivial?!?

Those people need to get outside the beltway more often.

Posted by JakeBCool, May 30 2006, 11:48AM - Link

Steve--
keep up the good work. I, like others, am envious of all the places you see, but that isn't particularly important compared to the info you give us.
. . .

Posted by kniterati, May 30 2006, 1:38PM - Link

Every morning I get in my little car and drive to my little job in the library and at night I drive home again. I read the news and all the stuff that's going on. Sometimes, when I have a moment, I search the giant databases that I sit next to all day to compare reports and try to figure out what's really happening. It gets so confusing some days that I wish I could go and really hear what people are saying and what's going on. Well, I can't. But you can and you do and I'm so glad. So please continue to tell us where you are and what you learn. It helps a lot with the discouragement factor.

Posted by Canuck Stuck in Muck, May 30 2006, 2:15PM - Link

Vancouver, eh? Say "Hi!" for me. That's where this Canuck's from. And Steve, keep up the good word!

Posted by lisainvan, May 30 2006, 3:58PM - Link

I just feel sorry for your dog...I hope he gets to spend an awful lot of time playing with other dogs.
If you want Vancouver suggestions, drop me a line.

Posted by Bob Tetrault, May 30 2006, 4:12PM - Link

Yeah, I mean really, this blog isn't about you, it's about the collective and narcissistic us: your readers!

Posted by Kathleen, May 30 2006, 4:16PM - Link

Maybe they are concerned for your safety???

Posted by UCFJoustudent, May 30 2006, 7:01PM - Link

Steve,

Your travels are immensely interesting, perhaps most of the griping comes from those who are just a bit envious - I know I am. Perhaps you should do a travel blog of sorts, post pictures and describe the places you went, not just the conferences. This is what Billmon did when he covered the WEF at Sharm this past week. Safe travels.

Posted by Desk Jockey, May 30 2006, 7:46PM - Link

Steve,

Keep on keeping on... and let us know where and what you are up to.

Posted by p.lukasiak, May 30 2006, 7:53PM - Link

personally, I'm hoping steve shows up in Philly on a "Drinking Liberally" day, so I can get him shitfaced and get the real story! :)

Posted by J.D., May 30 2006, 10:22PM - Link

Keep on truckin' Steve.

Pictures of your travels would be awesome (as would a weekly Oakley shot....)

Don't take yourself so seriously. If you feel the need to attack good natured satire, I would much rather live in this skin, than yours.

Posted by Hedley Lamarr, May 31 2006, 7:06AM - Link

I'd like to hear more about the actual places visited. See Billmon in Egypt, for example.

Posted by Farinata X, May 31 2006, 6:38PM - Link

I always enjoy hearing about your travels. Only small-minded and envious sourpusses, probably Republicans, object to these notes. Screw 'em.

Posted by Holden, Jun 01 2006, 1:10AM - Link

I wouldn't have commented on this issue, but then you had to go and say that phony stuff about hoping to meet your readers in the cities you visit. I'll be off to Athens next, can't wait to see all my loyal readers in the Plaka.

Hi Steve,

Where will you be speaking in Vancouver? Would like to attend, if possible.

Bring an umbrella.

Thanks,

Marshall

So may Vancouverites reading TWN? Me, too. Of course, I'm in academic exile here in Philadelphia. . . .

It is vital for those trying to rescue and renew the US to get out of the country, not only to take in outside perspectives face to face, but also to deliver a message of resistance and hope from within the US. I do so often in my work, and it is both inspiring and revitalizing for me, but perhaps even more importantly it is poignant and encouraging for those over there who love the US, and are profoundly disturbed by the detour it has taken, to hear the truth about the resistance, unfiltered, in-depth and first-hand.
