Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

Steve Clemons, Steve Coll & Peter Bergen on Pakistan

Talk about Orwellian thought control. This is one of the strangest political ads I have seen in a long time.

It's on YouTube; 29 seconds long.

Well worth watching. Relax, and think about good stuff. . .

OH... Put a sock in it Steve. It is a good Ad, and I for one like the beach. Besides, it plays to Dem's constant hippie, mush knee'd, evirocrazy/new age side....

Hopefully this will not spark a wildfire of peaceful calm ad's..... hmmmm

Posted by Steve Clemons Aug 29, 5:03PM - Link

SR -- lol. You are easily corralled by beach ads I guess. It's just too strange for me -- sorry. I don't trust "don't worry, be happy" ads from a guy who co-chairs the Committee on the Present Danger.

all the best,

Steve Clemons

Dems can complain about Lieberman for not listening to the party or for being to "conservative."

In CT there are more independent voters than any other party. So what does a Democratic primary really mean?

Let's look at the way people vote, "the masses are asses." After three months people can't even remember who they vote for, more don't even know who their representatives are.

The ad may have been a little lame. Lieberman needs to play up experience and mention how much money CT has got because of him. Voters care about "what have you done for me lately."

If all Lamont has are some sound-bytes and photo-ops of Lieberman and Bush, and that is enough to get elected, then the democratic process really has failed. George Washington was right, we don't need political parties.

Another point, Lieberman, as a Senator, represents the state of CT, not the Democratic party. The country needs to change this whole red-state blue-state label. Just because he no longer represents the Democrats, does not mean he no longer represents the great state of CT.

Posted by reader Aug 29, 5:32PM - Link

George Washington indeed WAS right, but not the way 5:18PM figured. Go study his farewell address to Congress and his explicit warnings about "permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others".

Posted by DewGood Aug 29, 5:48PM - Link

It's cute--and it's the perfect anti jar-your-sensibilities campaign ad.

I wouldn't mind if it ushers in an age of ambiant advertizing--probably would be a good thing. "This "time out from reality" approved by so and so."

The concept IS good stuff. At the end of the day I'm brain fried and "calm and peaceful" is what I need, if a politician can give me that I'll take it.

Haw!...you do know don't you that when the state excutes people they give them a tranqulizer before the lethal injection so they will be blissfully unaware.

Anyone check for subliminals? Or is the whole thing a subliminal? One could imagine 15 seconds of cavorting puppy, or gurgling baby. I don't know if it is that bad yet, a simple strategy of directly connecting feelings with a name totally without message or content may actually work, and be pretty scarey.

Posted by Eric Blagadoush Aug 29, 6:19PM - Link

Joe attempts to strike fear into our hearts with 'Lamont = Pro Terror' rhetoric and then lull us into his corner with what is essentially a subliminal message. He is appealing to emotions and avoiding reality. His tactics are ridiculous and shameful.

Deeply weird.

But if you think about what they're trying to accomplish, it's pretty clever and effective.

Posted by lyofbrooklyn Aug 29, 6:34PM - Link

I'm amazed that anyone finds this ad anything other than deeply creepy. Lie back, relax, and think of....Lieberman???

Posted by Carroll Aug 29, 6:59PM - Link

Yes..."creepy" is the right description. All it needs is the Twilight Zone background music.

Posted by fluxus Aug 29, 7:41PM - Link

I'm thinking about good stuff: Joe Lieberman out of work come 2007.

Posted by marky Aug 29, 7:47PM - Link

Can I imagine Loserman washing up on the beach, covered by seaweed and kelp, an idiotic grin on his face, with a McCain/Lieberamn08 pin on his chest?

Posted by gq Aug 29, 8:03PM - Link

Well, it looks like the ad is being discussed on what I would consider a non "left-wing" blog. I'd say that it was successful. Much more successful than Lamont has been, alas.

Posted by alec Aug 29, 9:54PM - Link

yep, it's got all of us talking.

brilliant marketing.

"Lie back, relax, and think of....Lieberman???"

Didn't Queen Victoria recommended that her female subjects adopt a similar mentality when enduring "unpleasant" activities? Only they were suppose to think of England.

Someone should do a parody of Lieberman's ad. It could be hilarious!

Posted by Pissed Off American Aug 30, 12:47AM - Link

I wonder, can they work one of Bush's fart jokes into it?

Posted by love can make you happy Aug 30, 8:08AM - Link

Don't think about bad stuff Benedict Arnoldman has done that Ned Lamont keeps bringing up.

Only think about the good stuff he has done.

And you will likely vote for Arnoldman again.

Worked for Reagan... It's a beautiful new morning in America, or is this one sunset? Anyhow if one wants nature and relaxation, best way is to do it directly and not watch TV.

Why hasn't anything been said about the Isikoff article and Armitage/Powell/Wilkerson's roles in plamegate? Why hasn't this muckraking, insider, exxxclusive site broken the news or offered any hard hitting analysis?

Posted by Steve Clemons Aug 30, 10:36AM - Link

Oh the Irony -- I don't quite get your sarcasm. Search my site. I think -- though I certainly may be mistaken -- that my own writing about Armitage/Powell and what occurred between them when Armitage internally confessed his sin of gossiping about Plame was posted here many, many months ago. In fact, last year, I ran a set of pieces thinking through who the original source had to be -- and discounted Hadley and John Bellinger in favor of Armitage.

Just search using the search function. I like Mike Isikoff and David Corn, but their revelations -- while quite detailed -- don't really share anything more than I have already written quite a long time ago.

My first thought is something subliminal and slimy and that fits Lieberman to a T. But my second thought is... does anyone in Connecticut know any good things to think about anymore? In South Carolina, good things to think about are pretty dang hard to come by these days. Joe shoulda made a list of good things for us or pointed us to Martha Stewart's website... doesn't she "do" good things??

Posted by FGF Aug 30, 11:05AM - Link

At the risk of stating the extremely obvious - my specialty - we are watching a sunrise, not a sunset (Conneticut is on the East Coast). If the metaphor is supposed to be the dawn of the new Independent Lieberman, it's pretty weak. In fact neither a setting sun or a rising one is safe metaphorical ground for Lieberman... his sun is setting after 18 years of public service and Lamont's is rising, at least that's the obvious metaphorical spin that could be made. The ad is tipe for a parody, which I will expect to see by later in the day, but it is not outside the boundries of reason or even good campaigning for Lamont to capitalize on the ad himself... The Dawn of a New Day For Conneticut.

Steve, unfortunately the few critical comments you are getting here are poorly thought out and poorly prenented. However you are still a gentleman in your response, and a real class act.

I'm with alec on this. Great marketing as we are all talking disparagingly of Lieberman's new propaganda angle.

Posted by Oh The Irony Aug 30, 12:50PM - Link

My sarcasm derives from the still unresolved questions of would this never have happened had Armitage been honest at first? is this really the vast Bush Administration conspiracy that the majority (even you at times) have claimed it was? Where does Wilkerson/Powell/Armitage's credibility on any of this lie now when they could have easily squashed this three years ago, prior to grand jury investigations, prior to the libby indictment (for extranneous reasons I might add) and prior to drag it has - unfairly - had on the white house. Simply put, this was never the conspiracy that this site portrayed it to be. And if it was, it originated and lived at state, not the white house or the VPO.

FGF, it's definitely a sunset (indicating subliminally that Joe's in decline), and it's not in Connecticut:

FGF -"we are watching a sunrise, not a sunset (Conneticut is on the East Coast). "

You assumed that this footage was shot on the east coast. You assumed wrong:

Also, its up to 35k views now on You Tube, but it has a one star rating and the vast majority of the comments are negative.

Yeah, GREAT ad.

Interested to see what the next poll results are.

"I'm with alec on this. Great marketing as we are all talking disparagingly of Lieberman's new propaganda angle."

i don't think everyone has been disparaging of the lieberman ad. i also don't think any of us (myself included) has seen, let alone discussed ANY of lamont's spots. also, the largely anti-lieberman crowd on this blog is not the intended audience of the commercial.

it is my hunch that this spot, as banal as it may be, is working for lieberman beyond his consultant's wildest expectations.

short of a scandal, no publicity is bad publicity.

"Also, its up to 35k views now on You Tube, but it has a one star rating and the vast majority of the comments are negative."

again, my hunch is that most of the traffic on youtube.com is being driven by links on this blog and other liberal netroot websites whose readers despise lieberman. the effect of this commercial should not be judged by comments here or on youtube.com

This ad is a hoot and a half.

Initially it sent a creepy chill up my spine. It was then that I thought it must be funded by "Mind Control Professionals for Liebermann."

But by the end of the schmalz I was laughing out loud. That's when I knew it was really funded by "Incompetent Hypnotists for Liebermann."

Posted by ahem Sep 01, 4:14AM - Link

It doesn't even look like the Connecticut coast. (Aside from the erroneous sunset.) Anyone sitting in Westport watching that will spend 29 seconds thinking 'where the heck was that, because it sure isn't from round here.'
