TWN Does Coffee Shops: Advance Notice

smallcoffeesm.jpg

One of the things I really enjoy doing is meeting regular folks; TWN readers; students; would be Congressman, Senators, Presidents and US Trade Representatives (in an alternative universe); soldiers who have returned from Afghanistan and Iraq; mothers; and weimaraner lovers when I travel.

Frequently I meet people and kibitz with folks over politics and policy in local coffee shops and had a very nice gathering in Aspen recently.

One of the well-deserved complaints though -- particularly from readers recently in Vancouver -- is that I get these gatherings together too late for some who actually plan.

Here is an effort to plan ahead. And these are some cool spots -- where I really want to hear what is going on in folks' minds about our national political choices and challenges.

Friday, September 1 -- PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
attending American Political Association Conference -- speaking on APSA panel Saturday

Thursday/Friday, September 7 & 8 -- New York, New York

speaking at Pace University Forum on 5th Anniversary of 9/11

Monday, September 11 -- IOWA CITY, IOWA

speaking at a number of community forums but have coffee shop time

Tuesday, September 12 -- MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

speaking at a number of community forums but have coffee shop time

Monday, September 18 -- NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

speaking for Nashville Committee on Foreign Relations but coffee shop time would work

Tuesday, September 19 -- BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

speaking for Birmingham Committee on Foreign Relations but coffee shop time would also work here

Wednesday - Friday, September 20 - 22 -- NEW YORK, NEW YORK

TWN will be hard at work covering the Clinton Global Initiative -- but yes, a coffee break would be cool

Again, thanks to all of you who read and support The Washington Note. Your moral support and financial contributions help make this venture quite worth the effort.

And for those of you I am fortunate enough to meet, I look forward to it.

As always, someone on your end needs to suggest a venue as I'm not that tuned in to the funky coffee shops that actually like clientele to hang out and chat.

More soon.

Steve, when are you going to come out to Los Angeles? I'm sure you'd be very welcome.

Looking forward to this.

... suggest a venue ...

Starbucks, outside, weather permitting. You could contact the marketing department in the main office and try to work something out for the long term. You get around enough.

Lieberman up 53-41% in Quinnipiac Poll. No surprise there. I hope those lefties enjoyed their 15 minutes of whooping and hollering because that is all they are going to get. I smell some JoeMentum.
Joe is going to win with Republicans and just enough blue collar Democrats.

You express quite well the disdain of Republicans and the way they use and manipulate "blue collar Democrats" into voting against their own best interests. It is like the visit of "The Music Man" with Robert Preston to con the locals. All Mehlman lacks to tout 'Repub Joe'is a Hollywood costume. With the rest of his buddies he is already flitting around holding out a tin cup.

Wow, the BBC just interviewed the Chinese ambassador to the UN and the questioning came
around to China's defense budget and Rumsfeld's criticism over the spiraling amount. He was
already a bit agitated and then he just went off:
"It's better for the U.S. to shut up and keep quiet. It's much, much better."

Boy, after Rice getting told to not bother coming to Beruit, Prescott having to deny that he said Bush's mideast dimplomacy was crap and
now this...it looks like things are sure coming
home to roost.

If we don't hang our war criminals then we are subject to collective punishment by our victims down the road. This is obvious, because that's what we have done to everyone else. We must show the rest of the world that we are responsible for our leaders' crimes. We must take total responsibility for the direction of this country before our war criminals destroy the Middle East and probably Europe. This is the only way we can avoid being destroyed ourselves by those who must do something in self-defense. The Iranians know that Bush and Olmert are contemplating their nuclear annihilation. They therefore are justified right now to attack us anyway they can. That is the law of survival and everyone is entitled to defend himself. Everyone has the right to survive, except aggressors. Aggressors deserve to die. Traitors must die because their treachery puts all countrymen in deadly danger. It is the law of survival. /JB Cambell/

My ideal punishment would be to lock up the top perps in the Bush administration in a large completely transparent apartment, with lights on 24/7, with microphones recording every conversation in every room, with cameras on all of them , at all times, on public view in the Hague. This jazzed-up Eichmann cage would be the perfect punishment for the war criminals who want to remove all privacy protections for American citizens.

It is high-time to face reality and the reality is that the US government is the main enemy of mankind. Its little puppet state, Israel, is the American "force projection" against the oil-producing countries of the Middle East. Whether America controls Israel or vice-versa doesn't matter. What matters is that the combination of the American government and Israel is the malignant tumor that will kill this world if it is not taken apart and crushed, piece by piece.

Politicizing terror isn’t working. “White House strategists are disappointed that the arrest of alleged terrorist plotters in the United Kingdom hasn’t increased President Bush’s job-approval ratings very much.” President Bush’s job approval rating stands at 37%, virtually unchanged from July.

Sorry Karl Rove ( you bucket of pondscum ) this same ole play ain't working anymore. This is a key reason ( along with Bush/Chneey/Rumsfeld failure in Iraq ) that Republicans are going down in Nov including Joe "Benedict' Lieberman.

Posted by Frank, Aug 18 2006, 9:58AM - Link

J.Bruce Cambell where have you been man???You got it all wrong; the U.S. is the big puppet state, Israel is the little puppeteer. America is the "force projection" for Israel, ala Iraq.

As to crushing our tumor, start with AIPAC.
Israel's contol over our country's foreign policy must be stopped. Lamont's election as senator will be the start of cutting the puppeteer's strings.

Do you really gotta get so complicated about it??? Can't we just stack 'em up naked in some federal prison corridor, and have some leering pervert shove chemical light sticks up their asses? (Dang, I would swear I just heard Cheney titter gleefully.)

Fox News Producer Resigns Over Middle East Coverage

Two weeks ago, two producers working for Fox News in Amman, Jordan resigned in protest of the network's coverage. In their resignation letter, Serene Sabbagh and Jomana Karadsheh wrote "We can no longer work with a news organization that claims to be fair and balanced when you are so far from that."

Steve,

I recommend two places in Iowa City.

-The Cottage. I worked there during school, and although the old house it used to be in is gone, the new one still features good coffee and great baked goods.

-Hamburg Inn. Not so much a coffee shop, but a diner. You may find it fun to sit in the Ronald Reagan booth. He dined there shortly after leaving the White House. Great breakfast.

Oh, and in Milwaukee, I highly recommend Kopps. Unbelievably good cheeseburgers and custard. It is Wisconsin after all!

Why no Baltimore? We have many great coffee shops. ;(

Hi Steve,
Thanks for getting this started earlier this time around. I'll be out of the country when you are in New York City, unfortunately. (ObKvell: my girlfriend is presenting a paper on hypertext in literature at a conference in Madrid.) But keep posting about your visits in advance, and with any luck, next time we will finally get to meet.

Looks interesting. And there's an exhibition on display in the Michael Schimmel Theater Lobby with artifacts from the WTC recovery.

Hi Steve,

I may have missed this somewhere in the archives, but do you ever do DC coffee meetups? I understand if you prefer to keep a low profile in the hometown, but those of us who live closer to the Dupont Farmers' Market than Milwaukee, Nashville, or NYC would also like to kibitz.

What are "regular folks"?

Posted by gabbneb, Aug 31 2006, 10:24AM - Link

recommendations near Pace...

http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=5065&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=81 a small, arts-and-craftsy independent coffee shop with very diverse clientele where political or financial discussion is often overheard despite the rickety furniture. a selection of coffee/tea, baked goods and desserts is cherry-picked daily from some of NYC's better purveyors, and the young staff will serve you decent soups or quiches or delicious gourmet hot dogs. local art of varying quality on the walls and unpredictable but usually inoffensive and cheery stuff on the soundsystem.

http://nymag.com/listings/stores/financier-patisserie/
more upscale and perhaps more comfortable than the place above, this is a bright, Euro-ish cafe/takeout joint very popular with young banker types on one of Manhattan's nicest and oldest (but slightly historicized) streets (where there is outdoor seating). excellent, fresh pastry, salad, and soup, quite good sandwiches and Illy coffee.

http://www.worldfinancialcenter.com/dining/?id=21
the other, more takeout-oriented and tourist-heavy, location of the place above, just inside from the plaza surrounding the World Financial Center marina. the only seating is in the small, sometimes smoker-heavy, but shaded outdoor seating area, but if the sun isn't beating down, there are nicer seating locations closer to the water.

There are widespread reports of counterfeit hoodia products. Mike Adams of News Target, estimates that 80 percent of hoodia products are contaminated or counterfeit. It is impossible to know if a hoodia product contains pure hoodia and the active ingredient, unless it has been tested by an independent laboratory.
