Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

At first glance I thought it was Mark Twain, though some know him as Samuel Clemens.

But sure enough, the Cheney button (though misspelled -- not Bolton's fault he told me) and the resume gave it away.

Happy Halloween.

This All Hallows Eve I was amazed at the number of front yards I saw with Bush effigies hanging from trees with different scrawled notes pinned to them like "LIAR" and "MURDERER" and "WAR CRIMINAL" ...... and it occurred to me that, yes, Bush should be "punished" after a fair Nuremburg-like trial, that could not miss in proving that he lied our country into an unnecessary, illegal and immoral pre-meditated attack on Iraq that has cost the lives of 100,000+. Unbelievable that some Halloween decor has become the conscience of what needs to be done to serve Justice.

Any impulse to chuckle over your clever disguise, is silenced when I glance at the picture directly beneath yours. There are simply no words to describe the tragedy we are witnessing.

Bush is a monster.

Posted by Cleanse Oct 31, 6:54PM - Link

Boo,

Please do not conflate the frivolous hobgoblins of Halloween festivities with the somber image of "punishing our president" for crimes against humanity. This grave thought is increasingly dawning on all Americans and needs many hours of grave contemplation before such words are publicly uttered. I know that such an outcome after a trial would be the most just course for what has been done and would show the rest of the world how to proceed in such cases, especially with one's own war criminals. Sorry folks -- I cannot tolerate threats or discussion about such threats to the President. I know passions run high, and I too think that the deaths of many hundreds of thousands on both all sides of our current Middle East conflict need accountability -- but I cannot host discussion of or support threats to the President.

I am editing all in appropriate or unacceptable comments -- something I rarely do.

I trust people understand.

Thanks,

Steve Clemons

Clemons, it is not a threat !!

It is a belief that Bush should be tried and executed for crimes against humanity.

It is a belief the Bush should be brought to judgement by the People and "punished" when found guilty for being responsible for the unnecessary deaths of 100,000+. Slam Dunk.

It is the belief that the world would be a better place after "punishment" of Bush.

It is a belief that God himself would want such justice to be meted out.

No threat was made, it was an opinion that justice must run its course.

Kerry said, "Bush Lied. People Died" and when that line of logic is followed to its end, yes it is the bitter truth, that Bush must be "punished" for it as would any War Criminal.

It's your blog so you can censure, but don't lie and say that you censured a threat. You censured an unsettling opinion; the only threat was that Justice Be Done!

Posted by bob Oct 31, 7:31PM - Link

Steve,

Put back up what you censored (not censured, Cleanse) and let us judge whether his writing rose to the level of the threat against the President, or if you over reacted to some hard truth.

Sincerely, Bob

Gee. Lighten up, people.

Nice costume, but the moustache looks too real.

Posted by Linda Oct 31, 9:11PM - Link

Lighten up, folks. Last year my two year old grandson was a duck for Halloween. I wanted to wrap one of his legs in gauze bandage and have him go as a lame duck. My daughter shares my politics, but felt it was premature and did not want to use a toddler to make political statements. This year he's old enough to decide on his own costume and is a T. Rex. So time and nature will take its course--This administration is lame and soon will be extinct.

So get everybody who agrees, get yourselves and everybody you know out to vote next week!!

Nice costume...definately see the Mark Twain resemblance.

Everyone else, leave politics aside. If you want a good speech, listed to John Kerry's press conference that was held today in resposne to his comments.

Posted by Cleanse Oct 31, 9:28PM - Link

I accept your cryptic apology and affirmation, Steve, in the editing my comment of 7:22 PM by replacing my word "execute" with "punish," which could mean anything from a verbal admonition to the ultimate.

But, what do you believe is just punishment for an aristocrat head of state who is responsible for the unnecessary deaths of 100,000+ because he lied his country into war. Perhaps you believe he should receive a much lighter sentence than would have been meted out to a failed artist WWI corporal. Maybe the aristocrat War Criminal should receive white collar Justice for having waged war and killed under false pretenses.

Tried under Nuremburg standards, what would be Bush's fate?

In Texas, such a mass murderer would be lethally injected, if the People were not blinded by loyalties that preclude Texas Justice for their favorite sons.

What "punishment" is Just in our Democracy for lying the country into an unnecessary, illegal, and immoral pre-meditated attack that has claimed the lives of 100,000+?

The answer is a Slam Dunk, but its name best not be uttered yet on these threads. I will respect your sensibilities as I suspect you feel the time is not ripe yet for such blunt talk.

Cheers!

I suppose to fully support your costume, you're going to be rude to every party guest, insist you have all the answers, and tell the host of the party that, if it were up to you, you'd blow up the kitchen of his/her apartment and no one would notice....or something like that.

I've never been in a decent costume in my life, so I probably shouldn't judge, but that is one lame ambassador's outfit. Where's the fracking govt. issued bangs? You had one goal in this enterprise, the hair, and you blew it. Great concept, though.

Funny hair! But you don't look puffed up enough to be Bolton. Look more like Einstein.

And drat!... I missed the threat to Bush but I don't think public statements like that are taken seriously, it's a sign of the growing frustration. On the other hand if I had a magic wand I can think of a bunch of people I would disappear...or turn into ants or toadies or whatever.

carroll did you dress up as a witch? forget about the magic wand if you want to turn folks into toads and etc!

Posted by Carroll Nov 01, 2:04PM - Link

Nope, I looked all over town for a Lynn Cheney wig but that hair style hasn't been used since the 50's.

Anyway I am into vodoo now and very busy making little dollies. That meltdown Lynn had Blitzer's show?..I did it! That was me and my little acupuncture pins! Heheheheh.

Posted by Kathleen Nov 01, 2:04PM - Link

Threats are taken seriously. Recenty a 14 year old girl was visited by the SS because she put some art work up on a blog that had to the words "Kill Bush". "Execute" however sounds like a legal term, as in killing by the State, one of Das Bush's favorite activites, pulling the switch on other lawe breakers. I'd say it's goosey-gander time for that little sadistic coward.

Incidentally, the SS broke the law when they went to the 14 year old girl's school and questioned her, a minor, without her parent's permission or knowledge. Her parents should sue those oppressive bastards.

On your costume, you do look more like Einstein than Revoltin Bolton, but the idea is funny and yes you should be a rude jerk while in the Bolton drag.

Posted by Steve Clemons Nov 01, 2:12PM - Link

Carroll -- funny that you should mention Einstein. Someone put this costume together for me -- and it was an Einstein wig, but we cut most of the hair off off the wig and moussed it down. It's all symbolic anyway...but you get a gold star for seeing through to the packaging,

Wow, what a anger filled thread....

Here's some comic relief:

Remember in 2004, at the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner, when President Bush, the Commander in Chief, was shown in awkward positions while looking behind drapes and moving furniture in the Oval Office while saying "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere," "Nope, no weapons over there!" and "Maybe under here?"

President Bush is really funny guy, a regular Bob Hope!!

That joke is sure to cheer up the men and women of the armed forces in Iraq.

He would have them pissing their pants!!

What a doozy!!

Bush is so funny !!

He should try his act over at Walter Reed!!!

"This is a piece that Diebold doesn't want America to see."

Well, not only Diebold, actually. What politicians have you seen actually address this issue besides John Conyers?? Have you ever seen the host of this blog address it? Despite the fact that Bev Harris has singlehandedly exposed the lack of security of these machines, as well as exposed criminal improprieties in the management of these machines, no one in Washington seems to want to assure the American public that their votes still count.

Apologists for the system, (we have one posting here, "MP") claim that these machines can be safely monitored by citizen oversight at the polling places. Horseshit. These machines are manipulated from within, through their codes, thier programs, and purposelly installed back door programming.

Many times here I have pointed out that all this political posturing and candidate advocation by Steve and others here is asinine if the electoral system is criminally manipulated. And there are huge volumes of evidence that that is in fact the case. Ask yourselves why, when John Conyers was investigating, and holding hearings about the presidential election fraud, he was consigned to a basement closet by the Republican assholes on the hill, and there was pretty much a media blackout imposed on his efforts.

If there was no fraud, what were these fuckers in the Puke Party afraid of?

Here is just one example of the wealth of information and evidence thast Harris has uncovered......

DOCUMENTED ELECTION LAW AND SECURITY VIOLATIONS IN SHELBY COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Shelby County candidates Shep Wilbun, Sondra Becton, Vernon Johnson and Otis Jackson have performed a valuable service for their community in exposing some of the most irregular and illegal electronic voting procedures in America. Shelby County ran its August 3, 2006 election in a fashion that violated all basic security procedures. The multiple breaches of security call into question the results and cast doubt on the legality of elections processing.

Evidence from election official declarations and discovery documents obtained in litigation over a recent election using Diebold machines reveals that:

* Illegal and uncertified Lexar Jump Drive software was loaded onto the Diebold GEMS central tabulator, enabling secretive data transfer on small USB "key chain" memory devices. This blocked election transparency and raises questions as to whether hidden vote manipulation may have...

Actually, of course, I never said that the machines' internal workings can be monitored per se without a lot of work. But a lot of monitoring of the election process can be done--and is being done by citizens groups, including by this citizen. Others should get involved, because there is a desperate need for it at all our polling places.

Greater voter scrutiny--even if they can't get inside the machines--makes it harder to steal elections for all the reasons I've mentioned before. It would be nice if we get turnout above the 50% mark--that would also make it harder to steal elections.

As to "asinine" candidate advocacy...if you don't care about the candidates, who cares if the machines are rigged?
