Interesting that the number of Chairmen past 80 (3 -- Byrd and the two Hawaiians) is greater than the number younger than 60 (2 -- Conrad and Schumer). Only one of the latter (Conrad) has a committee with significant jurisdiction, whereas Appropriations and Commerce are two of the most important committees in the Senate.

Ok, I'll confess.

I thought Robert Byrd would have been slotted for AGING. ;)

But to be honest, it was pretty much a wide-open field with many many candidates.
