Breaking: Bush Statement on Law of the Sea is Official

Share / Recommend - Comment - Print - Tuesday, May 15 2007, 2:56PM

President Bush has teed it up. All Senator Biden has to do now is swing for the fences.

If he does, U.S. ocean policy and foreign policy will be considerably stronger. And a handful of out of touch, ultra-conservative Senators will look much, much weaker.

I don't get to say this often, but President Bush is doing the right thing. Here's the statement:

I urge the Senate to act favorably on U.S. accession to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea during this session of Congress. Joining will serve the national security interests of the United States, including the maritime mobility of our armed forces worldwide. It will secure U.S. sovereign rights over extensive marine areas, including the valuable natural resources they contain. Accession will promote U.S. interests in the environmental health of the oceans. And it will give the United States a seat at the table when the rights that are vital to our interests are debated and interpreted.

A few weeks ago Scott Paul posted information about the anti-free speech crackdown in Russia, which is rapidly sliding back into a police state, like China already is. So why should American citizens, from the world's greatest democratically elected country, vote to ratify LOST when it just gives more power to the democracy and republican-haters at the United Nations' madhouse? That is exactly what LOST does; it weakens the power of the the democratic USA and strengthens the hands of police states like Russia, China and a whole host of other America and freedom haters.

Can I ask: why is it so important that Bush make this statement? The Dems run the Senate now; why on earth would Biden be waiting for Bush to give him the go-ahead?

i've heard Biden wants ZERO resistance. He's been totally unwilling to lead on this so far - waiting for GWB to go out front. now, Bush's statement will make this a shoo-in.

But even that doesn't mean that bad boy Biden will do anything!

Scott, can you list the Senators who you expect to oppose this?

thanks

Also, be careful. Remember Cheney's recent aircraft carrier speech. He mentioned Freedom of the Seas....Could this be a "blank check redux" to help tie Democrats into an Iran strike, should things in the Persian Gulf get ugly?

Blind support of anything pimped by the fascists warmongers, profiteers, and pathological liars in the Bush government are RIGHTFULLY subjet to more that a few grains of salt, and a thorough perusal, examination, and debate on the merits of this law. If it is beneficial to American interests, then Biden would do well to call for hearings to examine and articulate why, and who exactly benefits from this law, - and then and only then - if truly bipartisan support is warranted - then so be it.

Until that day, and without a more thorough examination of the details of the law - NOTHING the Bush government proposes should EVER be supported! This is what democracy looks like.

Sadly, I mean imperialist warmonger and profiteer, - I mean president has absolutely ZERO credibilty, and nothing he proposes should be accepted on its face with out through examination, vetting, and debate.

Sorry, folks, I can't reveal who's planning to vote against it. Why? Because until they're outed, it's never too late for them to change their minds!

From the link Paul posted:

"Moreover, as of November 2004, members of UNCLOS have the right to modify the treaty. As a member, the U.S. can use the treaty to seize new opportunities and protect our interests. By contrast, if we choose not to join, we put in jeopardy all of the provisions that U.S. negotiators worked tirelessly to negotiate into the treaty. Without the U.S. at the table, countries will be free to make changes without U.S. input. "

Paul, I'm wondering what the actual benefit is. If we're already complying, and no one can hold us to a treaty we've not committed to, why should we give up sovereignty?

The only thing that makes me comfortable, believe it or not, is that John Bolton gave his blessing in 2004. Whatever you think of him, he's no fan of the UN.

Awww, Scott....Booo! Don't cop out! C'omon....best guesses, then? Live a little and prognosticate!

It was a running joke among the press toward the beginning of this long process that when Henry Kissinger did background briefings he'd always talk about the "Law of Disease." I read papers about deep-sea mineral rights when I was an undergrad.

Boy, has this one been around for a long time.

Lost gives up what is left of our nation right? Sounds like Bush to me. Why is Biden playing this game? This Lost thing was defeated by Democrats earlier. I hope they understand we want to KEEP AMERICA and NOT GIVE IT AWAY BECAUSE THEN the terrorists won.......

The terrorists win when we change our way of life... according to Bush. Mr. Bush, stop changing our life.
