New America American Strategy Program Director Steve Clemons shares his thoughts on the Bush administration's removing North Korea from the "Axis of Evil" list.

Steve Clemons - Open Up Exchange and Travel With Cuba

On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest hanging fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.

A note from Tucker Carlson:

Let me be clear about an incident I referred to on MSNBC last night: In the mid-1980s, while I was a high school student, a man physically grabbed me in a men's room in Washington, DC. I yelled, pulled away from him and ran out of the room.

Twenty-five minutes later, a friend of mine and I returned to the men's room. The man was still there, presumably waiting to do to someone else what he had done to me. My friend and I seized the man and held him until a security guard arrived.

Several bloggers have characterized this is a sort of gay bashing. That's absurd, and an insult to anybody who has fought back against an unsolicited sexual attack. I wasn't angry with the man because he was gay. I was angry because he assaulted me.

Sorry Tucker -- guess I misunderstood the exact dialogue here:

ABRAMS: Tucker, what did you do, by the way? What did you do when he did that? We got to know.

CARLSON: I went back with someone I knew and grabbed the guy by the -- you know, and grabbed him, and -- and --

ABRAMS: And did what?

CARLSON: Hit him against the stall with his head, actually!

[laughter]

CARLSON: And then the cops came and arrested him. But let me say that I'm the least anti-gay right-winger you'll ever meet --

Tucker -- use your fame and opportunity for influence more wisely.  You conflate your views toward gays with a bad bathroom experience with someone who came on to you.  What lessons do you think you convey in your banter with Scarborough and Abrams?  Vigilanteism is cool. Gays lurk in bathrooms -- watch out! It's OK to assault someone after they have done something inappropriate.

I'm sure you were shocked by the experience, but you turned your opportunity to educate Americans as the "least anti-gay right winger" into frat boy banter.  But thanks for the clarification.

Isn't it obvious what's going on here? Tucker Carlson - who is hardly the paragon of western heterosexual masculinity - does not want people to think he's gay. And he thinks the sure-fire way to make sure nobody thinks he's gay is if he talks about how he once beat up a gay man.

America's bon vivant and bow-tie master profound, is coming out of the 'once assaulted' closet. Ergo, he "fought off his attacker with the aid of a friend." Yeah sure, sure. I remember old Tuck having quite the lark on Chris Matthews' program and boasting about the "ancillary benefits" of war on Iraq. I'm still waiting for old Tuck to explain what in hell those "ancillary benefits" might be. Old Tuck is an ass. Nuff said.

Chicken Hawk frat rat is what he is

Grow up Tucker, I`m sure it was a made up episode as do most of the adults out here in Reality Land.

What a doofus.

What a lame-ass excuse.

Anyone else notice he waited 25 minutes to go back with a buddy? Does he really expect people to believe that in that 25 minutes, he couldn't find a security guard? (Georgetown Park, by the way, is a nice upscale mall. When I went to college in DC, we used to go there a lot.)

Hey, Tuck, if you're "assaulted" (wink, wink) you find a policeman and report the "assault."

No, no, he was misquoted. Said the guy stiffed him. Went and got his pimp. SOP.

I don't have a problem with Tucker. Sure, he's a partisan hack, but I honestly don't believe he's homophobic. He was a teen when that happened and his reaction was simply childish. He should've just called the cops. And the three straight fratboys laughing about it is not really offensive, at least not to me. They are who they are and nobody's perfect.

Grabbing a kid in a bathroom? That's completely out of line. It's scary and disgusting. How many people would applaud if young, smart, assertive woman was grabbed by a creepy older man and the woman was able to restrain him by hitting his head against a stall? Plenty. She would be a hero. This isn't a gay issue, this is a sexual assault in a bathroom issue. Although I do not care for Mr. Carlson or his views, it is a good thing he was able to hand that predator over to the police and completely fine to be proud of himself and even laugh about it now.

Why on earth devote so much space to Tucker Carlson? He never has anything to say but does it lengthly.

Study: US preparing 'massive' military attack against Iran
Larisa Alexandrovna and Muriel Kane
Published: Tuesday August 28, 2007

The United States has the capacity for and may be prepared to launch without warning a massive assault on Iranian uranium enrichment facilities, as well as government buildings and infrastructure, using long-range bombers and missiles, according to a new analysis.

The paper, "Considering a war with Iran: A discussion paper on WMD in the Middle East" – written by well-respected British scholar and arms expert Dr. Dan Plesch, Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, and Martin Butcher, a former Director of the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) and former adviser to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament – was exclusively provided to RAW STORY late Friday under embargo.

"We wrote the report partly as we were surprised that this sort of quite elementary analysis had not been produced by the many well resourced Institutes in the United States," wrote Plesch in an email to Raw Story on Tuesday....." excerpt

I understand what people are saying, but I think I will give tucker a pass on this one.

If a guy did that to a girl I hope he would get popped as well.

Since many of us are facing time in the *Big House* i.e., gulag, when our Dauphin, lil' Bush, declares martial law here in the U.S. right after he attacks Iran.. So I would suggest that we talk to prisoners in our current *Big Houses* and find out how it feels to be subjected to sexual predators every day.

Rape, both homosexual, and heterosexual (female prisoners raped by male guards) is a huge issue in our prison/ industrial complex.

Why should Steve feel the need to defend a person who made sexual advances to a teen-ager in a bathroom?

I was the victim of a sexual predator when I was very young, and just wish that I had bashed his head against the wall, because, years later, he did it to a much younger friend.
