Lessons on Chutzpah: Douglas Feith and David Frum

Share / Recommend - Comment - Print - Monday, Nov 26 2007, 12:07PM

douglas feith clemons.jpg

The counter-neocon crowd really should be taking notes on not only the chutzpah of neoconservatives who helped take this nation on a self-destructive course, but on the tactics and vehicles they use.

I think that David Frum's new book and the forthcoming December 10th Bradley Lecture by Douglas Feith deserve particularly close inspection.

These A******s shouldn't be giving lectures, they should be in jail.

Posted by Dennis, Nov 26 2007, 1:25PM - Link

I agree. Talk about conspirators againist the nation....

The whole damned bunch have used the American military like it was their own private little military.

But nothing will be done about it, even if Democrats take all three branches of government in 2008.

Our own war criminals are safe regardless of politcal party.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Posted by Jan, Nov 26 2007, 1:31PM - Link

The topic of Feith's lecture is "War and Decision," which is ironic in view of the questionable decision he made during his stint in the Pentagon. Unfortunately I will be traveling on that day, but it would be interesting to hear what he says and then compare his speech to his own record.

Posted by p.lukasiak, Nov 26 2007, 2:12PM - Link

Actually, I don't think the Feith lecture should receive any attention whatsoever -- its just more wingnut welfare for Feith from the granddaddy of wingnut welfare 'think tanks', the AEI. Although ignoring Feith and AEI won't make them go away any time soon, treating them as if they are worthy of discussion merely elevates them (and lowers you).

Frum, on the other hand, does deserve to be "noticed". First off, his crap is being published by Doubleday -- and when reputable publishers associate themselves with war criminals and their enablers, they should be questioned about it. And while I can't find anything yet regarding his inevitable book promotion tour, that information should be published with an eye toward embarrassing those shows and stores that provide him with opportunities to spout his toxic drivel.

Plus, Frum is a CANADIAN!!!!!

Posted by Carroll, Nov 26 2007, 2:38PM - Link

I will bet that one chapter of the book is about "old conservative values" as a come-on.

While the rest of the book which will be about Islamist terriers, WWIII, and the usual neo empire drivel.

Posted by JohnH, Nov 26 2007, 4:38PM - Link

Is this the same Feith that Tommy Franks called "the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth?" And Steve says that he deserves attention? Whoa! IMHO time would be better spent conducting medical research on spineless Democrap syndrome, now at epidemic levels inside the Beltway.

"Plus, Frum is a CANADIAN!!!!!" posted by p.lukasiak

So am I.

What does his being Canadian have to do with his penchant for dangerous and delusional hyperbole? I believe he's part of a cult that doesn't much care what country you're from - it's what country you advocate for that matters. Frum's 'Canadianness' is just a fortunate and strategic accident of birth for him and a source of embarrassment for any Canadian like me, in much the same way that Norman Podhoretz's claim on American citizenship might embarrass an informed and ethically upright American citizen.

On a related note - The picture of Frum that appeared in Vanity Fair, accompanying an article on the Neos some time ago, gave me the creeps for the way it seemed to expose his soul. It was reminiscent of a Karsh photo - (google Karsh if you have to) - all shiny and smooth and oily - with a cold, supercilious contempt in his eye.

He reminded me of a well-fed, but now hungry, carnivorous snake.

Any chance of you posting it, Mr. Clemons, as a visual reminder of "what evil lurks in the souls of men?"?

steve - i agree with you...when a gov't sets up an 'office of special plans' that doesn't require oversight and is given free reign while having undue influence that needs to be studied as well... also when a media is given the same free ride that needs to be examined as well.. feith was head of the osp, while frum had deep connections with the mainstream media, as well as being a speechwriter for bush.

while you are at it, you might want to examine the Iranian Directorate >>The Office of Special Plans (OSP), which existed from September 2002 to June 2003, was a Pentagon unit created by Paul Wolfowitz and Douglas Feith, and headed by Feith, as charged by then-U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, to supply senior Bush administration officials with raw intelligence (unvetted by intelligence analysts, see Stovepiping) pertaining to Iraq.[1] An allegedly-similar unit, called the Iranian Directorate, was created several years later, in 2006, to deal with intelligence on Iran.<<

Steve:

Feith?! Feith?!! Really now...

from -
"The Lie Factory: The inside story of how the Bush administration pushed disinformation and bogus intelligence and led the nation to war."

"Feith, a former aide to Richard Perle at the Pentagon in the 1980s and an activist in far-right Zionist circles, held the view that there was no difference between U.S. and Israeli security policy and that the best way to secure both countries' future was to solve the Israeli-Palestinian problem not by serving as a broker, but with the United States as a force for "regime change" in the region."

"According to insiders, [Harold] Rhode worked with Feith to purge career Defense officials who weren't sufficiently enthusiastic about the muscular anti-Iraq crusade that Wolfowitz and Feith wanted. Rhode appeared to be "pulling people out of nooks and crannies of the Defense Intelligence Agency and other places to replace us with," says a former analyst. "They wanted nothing to do with the professional staff. And they wanted us the fuck out of there."

"The unofficial, off-site recruitment office for Feith and Rhode was the American Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank whose 12th-floor conference room in Washington is named for the dean of neoconservative defense strategists, the late Albert Wohlstetter, an influential RAND analyst and University of Chicago mathematician. Headquartered at AEI is Richard Perle, Wohlstetter's prize protege, the godfather of the AEI-Defense Department nexus of neoconservatives who was chairman of the Pentagon's influential Defense Policy Board. Rhode, along with Michael Rubin, a former AEI staffer who is also now at the Pentagon, was a ubiquitous presence at AEI conferences on Iraq over the past two years, and the two Pentagon officials seemed almost to be serving as stage managers for the AEI events, often sitting in the front row and speaking in stage whispers to panelists and AEI officials. Just after September 11, 2001, Feith and Rhode recruited David Wurmser, the director of Middle East studies for AEI, to serve as a Pentagon consultant."

Interesting that you have a thread about art right under a thread about Feith, Steve. You might do a little diggin' with some of your connections. I suspect Fieth and that slimey weasel Farouki have quite the collection of Iraqi art and antiquities.

Uhhhm, just a guess, mind you.

It says a lot about Georgetown University.

The study of foreign policy history in our educational "institutions" has failed us. When so called "prestigious" institutions hire a FEITH to teach foreign policy, it is a no brainer why our so called opinion makers, the product of higher education, have dismally failed in preventing a Hitlerian form of government to flourish in this country.

instead of an osp, america needs an office of investigation of what happened to wtc tower seven and how it fell on its own footprint.

ill buy all the other tales of that day if they will confront the issue of tower seven.

feith and any neocons can find work anywhere in academia because they run in the same circles...they make a phone call or two and a position is guarantee.

Even the amazing magical teleporting passport?

By the way, is it just me, or is his mouth really the size of an anu....uh, oops.......never mind.

Posted by samuel burke, Nov 27 2007, 12:19PM - Link

i just dont want to be shelved as being conspiratorial.

one event, world trade tower seven, will require a very vivid imagination to create an explanation to account for its magical disintegration.

and there are still men and women in america that dont know that a third tower came tumbling down that day.

i dont believe in conspiracy theories, i believe in conspiracies.

samuel - one either believes in conspiracy or coincidence theory... take yer pick...

In my opinion, neither "theory" is relevant to Mr. Burke's argument, dotdotdot. He'd rather believe in facts than theories, it seems to me.

He's got my vote. Facts. Gotta luv em.

Posted by ..., Nov 27 2007, 7:36PM - Link

facts don't seem to matter to those who want to label others conspiracy theorists, which is why i call those folks 'coincidence theorists'.. labels are just that though...

The further away from 9/11 we get, the shock of the event is wearing off. We were sold a fantastic fiction, and many of us bought it because the event was so terrifying, so horrendous, that we could not bring ourselves to believe anything other than the explanation we were offered. But absent the shock, there is just too much that doesn't add up. Considered without the emotion, and approached with logic and science, it become obvious that the "official story" is pure unmitigated bullshit, rife with holes and impossibilities. Period.

And when one carefully examines who was in the key bushwacker admin, dod, defense poli board, close consulting positions before and after 9/11, it was, guess who, master neo-con and warmonger feith, "prince of darkness" master neo-con and chairman of DPB and super warmonger perle, henry "could walk into the WH whenever he wanted to talk into gwb's ear" kissinger, master neo-con liar and warmonger wolfie, master neo-con warmonger wuermer, spy for Israel larry franklin, michael "Most journalists these days consider it beneath their dignity to simply report the words of government officials, and let it go at that." ledeen...who could seriously NOT CONSIDER that the US federal government may have been hijacked by a foreign country??

Now with all these masters-of-war firmly in place, before and after 9/11, can one just assume NO CONNECTION to 9/11, or are we back to 19 Arabs with boxcutters and knives and most of whom couldn't fly a single engine plane, be solely responsible for the incredible destruction on the worst day in American history?

I'll just be over here in the corner watching those dancing Israelis.

Thanks for laying it out in widescreen for me, Pauline, and then filling the screen.

Great post.

Well, thank goodness for former Senator Jim Jeffords, for subtracting himself from the Repugs and changing the majority in the Senate... but for him, we never would have had a 9/11 Commission at all, such as it was... and maybe we'd be much further down the road to Gulag Gov't. I was sooooooo grateful to Jeffords, I sent him my tax rebate that year. Even though I don't live in Vermont, I wanted to help him be re-elected.

I worked in Turkey in 1980 and 1981 as an Army Foreign Area officer. Times were a lot more dangerous then they are now (USSR was alive and well, Iran had taken hostages, Libya was setting off bombs in EU, etc.). Yet the neocons would like us to believe there is a snake under every rock today. They want us to operate in a state of fear. Personally I think it is all based on protecting Isreal, but our overt action only makes the threat to Isreal that much greater. Frum, Feith, and Wolfowicz just don get it!!!!
