turkeys 2 chestertown the washington note.jpg

Yesterday, I saved these turkeys from near tragedy as they were trying to cross Highway 213 near Chestertown, Maryland.

I've seen a lot of wild turkeys in Maryland and Colorado -- but few of them looked as plump and, well, like the turkeys we used to draw in elementary school around Thanksgiving time.

And here we have a family of American voters, merrily making their way to the polls.

I think it was a wise decision to not make the national bird what was a common entree even at the time. They do look delicious.

For saving those turkeys props to you from the folks I work for-the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Personally I'm of the ilk that preserves wildlife by throwing a party...

Come on up to Connecticut some time and watch all of the wild turkeys swanning about the Merritt Parkway. They can regularly be observed scratching in the brush within an arms length alongside the pavement. Of course, one will occasionally decide to go flying over the highway from one side of the berm to the other. Fortunately, it is a parkway, so they only need to clear big SUVs at the worst, no tractor trailers. Bradley Airport up near Hartford even has its own flock living somewhere in the woods near the perimeter road in the back of the airport property.

A wild turkey in flight is rather like a large football attempting to fly of its own volition. I still wish Franklin had been successful and the wild turkey had become our national bird, in part because they are such cool birds and in part because the eagle allows for such misguided imagery regarding our national purpose (for the record, I do think that eagles in flight are magnificent birds). And if the Wild Turkey were our national symbol, we as a nation could party down patrioticallyh at 86 proof (did I get the alcohol content right?)
