This is a note from a good friend -- unnamed -- in the Senate regarding my earlier post about US Senators on their way to the Brussels Forum getting stuck in Newfoundland:

Hey Steve,

I just saw your post. I was on that broken-down plane, along with my boss Senator XXXXXXXX. Senators XXX and XXX were on the delegation too. Long story short, after we made a refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland, a problem developed with the starter ignition, so the plane couldn't start. They were unable to get a replacement part flown in until this morning. By that time, there would have been no point flying onward to Brussels and so we just returned home.

Too bad, it looked like a great agenda. One of the TV channels in our hotel rooms this afternoon was showing the BBC debate between Holbrooke and others, so we got a small taste of the Forum!

Cheers,

An enthusiastic TWN reader

My friend -- all I have to say is that the night owl sessions were great -- and then the owl owl sessions were even better.

Do I have to comment in order to see the comments???

When I click on "permanent link" I get the story only and the box for making a comment.

When I click on "Comment" I get the same thing.

I use Mac OS 10.3.9/Firefox 2.0.0.12

This is my comment, I guess.

But I won't be able to see any answers to this comment, will I?? Talk about Catch-22...or maybe
posting this comment "qualifies" me to see the comments?

Oh. Maybe there weren't any comments yet?
Sorry--I thought the newsletter said 2 comments.

Varney, its obvious you have the qualifications to join the Bush team. I suggest you send them a resume immediately.

Steve,

As someone who also lives in the DC area (a NoVA resident), I've wondered about your coffee sessions. Are they always on the road, or do you occasionally chat here in town?

There's a few things I'm wondering (slightly off-topic, and I apologize for that):

-Where is the Senate right now on UNCLOS? Things looking better, or worse, for its ratification?

-When you mention that the Cuban government is allowing some simple consumer electronics, but that the US is still restricting "its content", would that include software written here by citizens, even if free (open-source)?

-Where do you, and where does the NAF, stand on 'vice taxes' - I know the Cuban lobby is upset about tobacco taxes because it directly impacts cigars, one of Cuba's economic staples?

Sorry. These curiosities pile up on me. :)
Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

Oh, and the new site design?
AMAZING!

Give whoever did it a root beer float.

Who were the Senators stranded in Gander? Given their approval ratings, did anyone think of just leaving them there? Oh well, I guess you can always hope...
