Ilan Goldenberg has posted links to a huge dump of FOIA-obtained documents that the Department of Defense has made available to the New York Times and to the public. Goldenberg makes an appeal:

We need help from our readers. Let me know if you find anything interesting.

It's a lot of stuff -- and I bet there are some juicy, revealing items.

Steve: I hope that Goldenberg or others - maybe even you - will download these documents and put them back up on a mirror site.

As is, the current cache of documents is on the Pentagon's website and anyone visiting will no doubt have their IP address logged.

Steve:

Perhaps I am being hyper-sensitive. Perhaps I am forgetting that the blogger does not always get to select the illustrations any more than the reporter gets to write the headlines. Perhaps I should not have first read the post about the recent London soiree of the nuclear capable Algonquin Roundtable.

Whatever the reason, I find myself deeply troubled and a bit offended by the choice of photo here. Is it meant to be ironic, dismissive, mocking, tragic, or all of the above? Or perhaps it was selected without considering that the individuals in this photo are U.S. Military Academy cadets who, having just completed their four years of undergraduate education at West Point, are taking the oath required for commissioning as a 2LT in the U.S. Army. They are pictured here in the process of swearing to support and defend the Constitution of the United States; knowing full well that they are bound for a war where their faith in that document will be tested less by enemy fire than by choices made by the participants in the parlor games described in the other post.

I am a huge fan of and frequent participant in archival research. Before I dig through this new material at the risk of having my IP recorded by "The Pentagon" (You know; that building with the power to ensure that all who enter thinks, believe, and acts the same way and, therefore, all under the sway of this architectural leviathan are solely to blame for any errors in policy?), am I seeking juicy revealing items on these young officers? Is the message "Pity these young dupes," or do we get misty eyed and tell them "Thank you for your service. We support the troops!" when what were really saying to each other "Thank God! Here is a new cohort of test subjects. Now we can validate more of our theories and use the outcomes to tease and taunt each other."

It's probably just me, but I have no desire to buy anyone involved a new tie, forwarded with a conciliatory note.
