Norm Coleman Could Survive by 314 Votes

According to the latest vote results from CNN, Norm Coleman's lead over Al Franken in the initial vote tally has now shrunk to 314 votes.

Under state law, there will be an automatic recount.

Norm Coleman, for those with short memories, lost a governor's race to Jesse the Body Ventura a few years ago.

Now, Minnesota is a good-sized state. A lot of Democrats live there. Many of them have lived there all their lives. Is it really true that not one of them could have beaten Norm Coleman? I'm serious. Norm Coleman to me is just a guy. He'll never make history in the Senate, and won't ruin the country there either. But he has a history of electoral weakness, part of which stems from his being, and sounding like he was, from somewhere besides Minnesota -- a pretty substantial advantage for a Democratic candidate who was not also from somewhere besides Minnesota. I'm sure Al Franken is charming company at a dinner party, but is he really the best the DFL could come up with this year?
