To discuss tomorrow's elections in South Africa, the New America Foundation/American Strategy Program is hosting Financial Times World News Editor Alec Russell, who will discuss his new book, Bring Me My Machine Gun: The Battle For The Soul of South Africa, From Mandela to Zuma.

Russell has spent the past several years reporting from South Africa - and I am looking forward to his impressions as Jacob Zuma becomes the most powerful man in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This event will STREAM LIVE bright and early tomorrow morning at 9am right here at The Washington Note.

Great, the South Africans are about to give the world another gay hating misogynist President. I am sure that he and President Ahmadinejad will become fast friends.

Here's some of what Jacob Zuma has said about gay people,

"same-sex marriage is a disgrace to the nation and to God":

He also said,

"When I was growing up, an ungqingili (a derogatory term for homosexual akin to queer) would not have stood in front of me. I would knock him out."

And then there's this,

"Comrades, stop wasting your time with predatory minorities like gays, academics, editors and feminists. They have no real constituency but very powerful networks. I am sure Gays will tell you how they gallantly fought to release Mandela. It is the nature of these predatory minorities to latch on to the selfless struggles of the ordinary majority, the same applies to the press about press freedom. Press freedom was handed to them by the masses who they despise today. That's the nature of this powerful network...If you don't like gays that's it, there are serious rumours about some of ANC leaders sexual leanings, especially those in Business."

Of course Zuma is also a polygamist with four wives. This is what he had to say at his trial about his assistant who accused him of rape (Zuma was acquitted)

"She normally came to me wearing pants, but on that day she had on a skirt and she was sitting in a way that was not usual. Under normal circumstances, if a woman is dressed in a skirt, she will sit properly with her legs together. But she [the rape complainant] crossed her legs and wouldn’t even mind if the skirt was raised very much...”

And this,

“I was taught that leaving a woman in that state [sexually aroused] was the worst thing a [Zulu] man can do. She could even have you arrested and charged with rape,” Zuma, "adding this was done in accordance with what I was taught as a youngster growing up in Nkandla, in northern KwaZulu-Natal."

Perhaps Alec Russell can comment on some of this when he gives his talk. In light of Zuma's comments, I would also be curious if Archbishop Desmond Tutu has announced how he will vote.

homophobics always appear really insecure to me in spite of the tough exterior they like to project... from my own experience i have found it works like that in other situations in life as well..

Government will release the results of a so called stress test later this month, if most banks will pass they'll be able to return the money. Certain institutions will pass, like Goldman Sachs.
