Note: Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William J. Burns will deliver remarks at approximately 12:45 pm. His remarks will be on the record. I will then moderate an off the record Q&A session with Secretary Burns, during which time this LIVE STREAM will cut out. We will then return at approximately 2:00 pm for our third panel discussion.
Today, I am co-charing a major national policy forum on US-Saudi economic and strategic perspectives on the Middle East and global economic and security system.
We have quite a line-up which I'll share below. C-Span will be airing parts of the conference, but the entire program will run live here on The Washington Note -- and video will be posted here for later viewing.

Great first panel, but it abruptly cut off in the middle of Hagel's comments relating to the issues dividing Saudi Arabia and the U.S., namely status of women, etc...

Anne Marie Slaugter ask what do the U.S. and Saudi Arabia have in common ?
"stable, durable peace in the Israeli Palestinian conflict"
"prosperity in the region"
"a middle east built on tolerance"
"the great religions of the world co-existing in the middle east"
while anne was in China she became very aware of the idea of "rebuilding of ancient trade routes"

Congratulations on a very good one-day conference. Everyone is to be highly congratulated, especially the New America Foundation, the Washington Note, the CIT and the many participants. Thank you Steve Clemons, Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Saeed, Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Fahd and all the other participants from both the United States and Saudi Arabia. I watched much of the conference live through webstream sitting in my home in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. I could not attend as the U.S. Embasy said it may take 4 months for me to get a visa to visit the USA. It only took two months to get a visa 2 years ago, and only 2 hours 4 years ago! You made my day!
Instead of channeling money to existing bailout banks, erect a new edifice to serve as a pillar of foreign policy support to places like Palestine. Have US and Saudi dollars match amounts for capital investment that can create jobs for Israel and Palestine to the point both sides see advantage to end conflict there.
Make an investment bank speicfically for such purpose, free of the debt packaging, etc.
Congrats, Steve, a job well done. Keep it up, man.

Your skills are absolutely impressive. I was able to watch almost the entire broadcaste of your excellent meeting all the way across the world in Riyadh.
His Royal Highness Prince Turki Alfaisal was excellent in his commentary as were Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski, Ms. Rita Hauser, Senator Chuck Hagel, His Excellency Minister Abdullah Alireza.
But to tell you the honest truth Steven Clemons, you are the key to the success of this excellent meeting. I have never seen a person who had such skill and confidence and mastery of details and personalities and ideas like you at the podium. You made this meeting extremely exciting and extremely worthwhile for all of the participants and observers.
I wish you had been the moderator for all of the excellent sessions. I applaud your management of the easy and the hard questions alike.
I truly think that the meeting you held yesterday may be a historic one which people will point to as the start of a very newly revised US-Saudi relationship.
Thank you for your priceless, excellent, tireless work to educate so many on the important foreign policies that we should embrace.
