LIVE STREAM: Coll, Bergen, Chandrasekaran, and DeYoung on America's War in Afghanistan

Today, the New America Foundation is hosting an important event on America's war in Afghanistan, featuring my New America Foundation colleagues Peter Bergen and Steve Coll, as well as Washington Post standout journalists Rajiv Chandrasekaran and Karen DeYoung.
The event will run from 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm and will stream live here at The Washington Note.
As the debate in Washington heats up about whether to send more troops to Afghanistan, I think it is important to provide a variety of perspectives to my readers - and these four are among Washington's most knowledgeable commentators on this topic.
Today's event will also serve as the formal launch of the AfPak Channel, a New America Foundation/Foreign Policy Magazine project.
As I have written on this blog, I am personally increasingly disturbed by the Obama administration's approach to Afghanistan - a position that I articulated in a letter to President Obama that I signed on to earlier this week. On the skeptical side, I also recommend reading Paul Pillar's op-ed from yesterday that questions whether preventing a terrorist "safe haven" in Afghanistan is really worth the blood and treasure it will cost.

Joe asked, " Does anyone think Bin Laden would be capable of
killing that many Americans in the same timeframe?"
Well, if they'd choked on the maggots feeding on Bin Laden's
corpse.
Listen up people, Bin Laden was not behind Sept. 11. Once you
get that into your noggins the rest makes absolute sense, if
you're shrooming.
On to a more serious matter: there have been many "people"
which I'll assume you all are absent of proof otherwise, easy e I
think is a pilotless drone, complaining about typos.
I'm on a Mac because I'm an elitist and if I don't type really fast
and post immediately Steve's captua, or whatever it's called, eats
my post. Which is probably for the Greater Good, but is
somewhat annoying, especially on the rare occasion I have
words of wisdom to impart.
Like yesterday when I spoke with a military planner who said
Israel is going to attack Iran most probably in December.
So cut us some slack here - I think Norheim is on a mac too
when he's not off negotiating trade agreements with Japan to
import other geishas from Kyoto. He's been missing lately,
anyone checked his pulse?
Easy e, Steve's using Ustream. I am always so ahead of the
curve...
OT - hey steve, any chance of discussing the israeli settlement freeze in exchange for war on iran that has now been shown for the joke it is?? obama looks weak as usual..
meanwhile the usa is discontinuing the idea of a missile shield for eastern europe...
Our missile shield concession will bring Russia into this greater? This is to benefit the NATO/EU status of Turkey, so they will lever Iran as a western counter balance?
Think of it in terms of triangulation.

When I post to TWN and the post is not accepted - apparently because the comments window with the initial Captcha code has been open too long - I just use the browser back arrow and typically find my comments are still sitting there in the "Your Comments" box. If I cut the comments out of the box, reload the window, paste the comments back into the box, and then submit them with the new Captcha code, they go right through.
What I generally do now is just routinely cut the comments out of the box and reload the screen to get a fresh Captcha right before posting them.
What I would *really* like Steve to do is enable HTML tags.
Don't try to reason with me Dan, it's a losing battle. Sam Husseini,
best reporter in DC on air now.
"hey steve, any chance of discussing the israeli settlement freeze"
There is no "settlement freeze", thanks in no small part to Hoyer and Reid showing Israel that Obama stands alone on this issue.
Perhaps the LIE that Israel is offering even small concessions on the settlements is the reason for the silence of our media and so called "progressive" or "realist" blogs such as this one. Simply broken down to brass tacks, it will never do to publically announce that the "settlement freeze" BULLSHIT is just one more con-job being fed to the American people.
I repeat; THERE IS NO SETTLEMENT FREEZE. And Reid and Hoyer have almost guaranteed that THERE WILL BE NO SETTLEMENT FREEZE.
I also repeat; THE SILENCE OF TWN ON THIS ISSUE IS DEAFENING.

Bingo, the EXACT technique I use. It is infallible.
Another note; The virus I picked up yesterday was a monster. Its called "Antivirus Pro 2010", and is sweeping the internet right now. It turned off my own antivirus software, and corrupted my system to the degree it was almost unusable. (Much to Pimple's perverted delight. Now THERE'S a sick puppy.)
Anyway, I finally conquered it with the 'ol universal fix-all; money. Symantec, (Norton), has a tech service, online, that allows a technician to take remote control of your computer, and they remove the virus for you, while you relax, watch TV, or whatever floats your boat. I imagine Kotz could use the extra time to stuff firecrackers up Panda rectums, or Pimples might utilize the time teaching his kids basic illiteracy.
So, for a hundred bucks, some guy in India got to learn all my deep dark secrets while tediously taking three hours to remove a nasty virus from my computer. He did a great job, and it was well worth the hundred bucks. Now, if he doesn't blackmail me or clean out my bank account, I'm tickled pink.
I'm sorry Kotz, I didn't mean to imply you needed to travel for recreation. I meant to say "Koala rectums". No sense spending any more money than you have to.
Every bit of time and energy spent urging the Obama administration to change course in Afghanistan is time and energy very, very well spent.
POA
Before I exhausted all my firecrackers I kept one, the most firing one, for your...And the expense of travelling to the U.S. for such a great pleasure is worth it every bit of the way.
"And the expense of travelling to the U.S. for such a great pleasure is worth it every bit of the way"
You needn't bother, Kotz. You're already a tremendous pain in the ass. Why fly when you can do it from the comfort of your own cave?
I ain't coming for the pain, POA,I'm coming for the pleasure.
Well, Kotz, the irony is, if you expect to get on an airplane carrying an explosive, you're going to have to use YOUR asshole to transport it.
My advice??? Stick to salads on your way over, and avoid Mexican food at all costs.
ooch! little baby is pretty sensitive, lol...
POA, never trust an Indian. I mean that. Check your credit card
statements till you die and if there's a charge for a samosa shop
in Delhi, call up Rajiv and tell him you're coming after him with a
hamburger, that you'll shove down his throat after forcing him
into an arranged marriage with your mother-in-law.
Koalas are supposed to be nasty creatures but then so are
Australians. You can't blame Kotza for being, whatever he is,
warmonger -- Australians are a lot like Americans in that they're
armchair warriors, except when they actually have to do
something, like Gallipoli, they moan about it for 100 years.
Americans never boast about their achievements.
I've had numerous run-ins with Ackerman, Ros-Lehtinen, Engels
except sadly I was never in a car that worked when they
happened.
When I first started calling Congress to complain about the Israel
lobby, the sweet-voiced intern on the other end of the phone,
whose last job was house secretary of Kappa Gamma Gamma,
would tell me, with clockwork regularity, "Israel is the only
democracy in the Middle East." And I would point out that
Lebanon has been holding elections for decades, that is when
Israel wasn't strafing/ occupying / raping her.
The Congressional interns have stopped that "Israel is the only
democracy in the Middle East" line now -- probably because the
callers started laughing hysterically.
Now they call the Capitol Police and I get a call from some
"detective" telling me to back off and I tell them to fuck off.
Power of the Lobby -- who was talking about how it wasn't as
powerful as all those people I've interviewed have said it is?
POA.
So no need for further explanation as to why I'm on a "special
screening" (everyone should be so "special" because maybe
they'd take action and try to change the topsy turvy world we
live in because of the "War on Terriers") list when I fly, which I
don't, I take the bus or walk. LA to Phoenix only takes about 6
months if you jog at a relatively fast clip and the Minutemen
don't get you.
I think I'm going to just get a wagon and have the dogs pull me.
Worthless eaters.
