If the US wants to finish off Al Qaeda, first it will have to stop working with it--end support of Jundallah, an Al Qaeda organization that recently conducted the terrorist attack in Baluchistan.

"The Baluchis are Sunni fundamentalists who hate the regime in Tehran, but you can also describe them as al-Qaeda. These are guys who cut off the heads of nonbelievers – in this case, it’s Shi’ite Iranians. The irony is that we’re once again working with Sunni fundamentalists, just as we did in Afghanistan in the 1980s." --from a July 2008 article in The New Yorker, by Seymour Hersh who quoted Robert Baer, a former CIA clandestine officer who worked for nearly two decades in South Asia and the Middle East.

The enemy is US?

thanks johnh... nothing like the usa polluting the water, while saying it wants fresh water... the usa is front and center in helping support terrorism, something it is loath to examine in its efforts to destabilize 'select' countries around the globe... one would think the usa could learn from the past 50 years of cia supported covert actions, but nah... it is buried in some classified info that is not available to the public and the public is too brain dead to clue into its own gov'ts actions...

Fantastic event.

Will there by chance be a transcript available afterward? Jw.

Thanks,

- Josh

I second the request for a transcript, realizing that it's probably a lot more work to assemble than a recording or streaming video. It's just a much more convenient medium for those of us who need to absorb a large amount of information in a short time.

Incidentally, if transcripts for events like these are not available until some time afterward, they are still valuable. Links to them could be posted on the sidebar under the VA Loan Refinancing ad.

"now, however, the National Security Adviser to President Obama, former Marine Gen. James Jones has made a statement, conveniently buried by the friendly US media, about the estimated size of the present Al Qaeda danger in Afghanistan. Jones told Congress, “The al-Qaeda presence is very diminished. The maximum estimate is less than 100 operating in the country, no bases, no ability to launch attacks on either us or our allies.”

That means that Al-Qaeda, for all practical purposes, does not exist in Afghanistan. Oops…"

when will those in the political periphery finally start to discuss these issues with clear undiluted sincerity?

american awaits an honest debate devoid of political hacksmanship.

"According even to an official UN report, opium production in Afghanistan has risen dramatically since the downfall of the Taliban in 2001. UNODC data shows more opium poppy cultivation in each of the past four growing seasons (2004-2007), than in any one year during Taliban rule. More land is now used for opium in Afghanistan, than for coca cultivation in Latin America. In 2007, 93% of the opiates on the world market originated in Afghanistan. This is no accident.

It has been documented that Washington hand-picked the controversial Hamid Karzai, a Pashtun warlord from the Popalzai tribe, long in the CIA’s service, brought him back from exile in the USA, created a Hollywood mythology around his “courageous leadership of his people.” According to Afghan sources, Karzai is the Opium “Godfather” of Afghanistan today. There is apparently no accident that he was and is today still Washington’s preferred man in Kabul. Yet even with massive vote buying and fraud and intimidation, Karzai’s days could be ending as President"

"Karzai, before becoming puppet US president, had been a Unocal lobbyist."

All this gibberish regarding al Quaida is intentional message-force multiplying to decieve and distract the American public from the real objectives of all our bloody costly neverendingwar military misadventures. It's all about the oil. al Quaida has absolutely NOTHING to do with our massive troop and equipment presense in Iraq, or Afghanistan. The fascists in the bushgov invented this twisted hegellian dynamic, and the Obama administration is perpetuating it. The planting of massive tons of US military hardware and thousands of US warfighters in the respective regions are exclusively intended to secure flows of oil and energy resources.

al Quaida and bin Laden we created, trained, armed, and funded by the CIA and other US intelligence apparatii. Most of the revolving cycle of goodoneday, badthenext Afghan, or Iraqi, or Pakistani, or Saudi imams, clerics, warlords, freedom fighters are now, or were at one time on the payroll and armed trained by the US socalled intelligence community. We continually play this thug, that arms trader, another warlord and still another evildoer against the other, for economic ends, only to switch sides sometime later and befriend our former arch enemies, to combat our former friends all to advance the US unholy designs on controlling the worlds oil resources militarily.

Our government, like the shaitans in the bushgov that initiated this evil eneterprize, is wasting blood and treasure in Afghanistan, Iraq, and through-out region to secure oil and energy resources militarily and enrich America's oil and energy oligarchs.

The goddess only knows what further pernicious evil the private military and private intelligence industrial complexes are conjuring in the regions, since know one bothers to examine these criminals behavior or practices, and rarely even mentions that both in both Iraq and Afghanistan, US mercinaries, oh - I mean private military and private intelligence operators outnumber US troops.

What a monumental waste of time and espace blabbing on about al Quaida, when the real crimes and untoward policies and practices go unmentioned and ignored.

The funding money went untouched. No investigation of the stock selloff for airlines before 9-11, flying out the bin ladens, etc.

You really want to knock a dent into al qaeida, then follow the money.
End these wars and institute a new GI Bill so we can patternt he health care overhaul and provide incentive for job creative through loans for new homes, schools, business, for those who served.

New developments on the Sibel thing. It seems Perle and Feith have jumped in with character assasination against Sibel, pimped as denials, as has Grossman's lobby group's spokesman.

Well, this should put Sibel's assertions to rest, eh? I mean after all, we all KNOW how honest and upstanding Feith and Perle are, since finding WMDs in Iraq, and having had established a concrete link between Saddam and Bin Laden.

Yep, you gotta be some kinda "conspiracy theorist" to believe Feith and Perle lied to us, doncha? If either of these two say something, by golly, you can take it to the bank.

AFGHANISTAN VOTE RECOUNT IS A COMPLETE FARCE AND A FRAUD
The Afghan Presidential elections were rigged in many ways, however the vote recount is even bigger farce. It seems that EU & US representatives conducting this exercise had a pre-determined goal to bring Hamid Karzai's vote below 50% in order to call a run off election.

The two Afghan individuals involved with recount effort resigned in disgust a few days ago, when they discovered the real mandate of EU representatives. It is amazing how Mr. Karzai's vote has been brought down to 49.6% (just below 50%) to order a recount. First the elections were a farce and now the recount is an even bigger farce.

If the intention is to establish democracy and rule of law in Afghanistan, then this is a total violation of all democratic norms. The Afghan populace has no interest whatsoever in these goings on as they don't see their life changing either under Karzai or Abdullah. After all these two gentlemen have been center stage for last eight years and are responsible for the failure of Afghan civil and military administration. Efforts are now afoot by EU & US to get Karzai to form a coalition with Abdullah, a sure recipe for disaster.

In the last elections, less than 30% Afghan electorate voted and when fraudulent votes are counted out, the count is probably less than 25%. In a run off election less than 20% are likely to vote. If President Obama and Hillary Clinton are betting on this democratic move, then it is doomed to failure.

What is needed is to rescind the fraudulent elections, disqualify Karzai and Abdullah for they represent drug and crime syndicates, form a Government of national unity of all Afghan ethnic groups for a period of one year and then have fresh elections. That would allow for healing to take place in fractious Afghan society and also for new leadership to emerge. The people of Afghanistan need to be inclusive in this process, they are then likely be more involved in the democratic process.

A foreign imposed formula is only likely to bring more chaos, more ethnic rivalry and destabilization of the region resulting in foreign troops having to stay longer than they need to. Do the US public have the stomach for US forces to stay there another five years and can the US Military sustain continued war, I think not.

Gosh, Ajaz, you aren't implying the United States Government would actually do something underhanded, are you? Gads man, doncha know that "conspiracy theories" don't fly here? Any minute now, questions will be along to tell you something, anything, nothing, to discourage you from having a concrete opinion about something, anything, nothing.

Its the unkown unkowns that make the known knowns unkown even when they're known. Get it?

When CODEPINK cofounder Jodie Evans met with President Obama last week, she asked him to bring more Afghan women to the table. While we hope he will take this suggestion to heart and involve more women in the negotiation process, Code Pink is not going to sit around idly waiting for it to happen. They are helping to bring voices of Afghan women to the public, and invite you to hear them.

CODEPINK is proud to cosponsor portions of Malalai Joya's book tour which announces the release of her bold new memoir, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice. Here's your chance to hear her story!

Best thing I have seen in a while.

If you did not see Hardball tonight it is so worth it. Chris Matthews and Ron Reagan boxed Gaffney around like he was one of those blow up clowns that you keep punching in the nose. They were slamming Gaffney for that black tie dinner last night honoring Cheney and “his felon” This was the way Matthews referred to Libby. They bashed Cheney for undermining the President.

Reagan kept throwing this punch. “Cheney lacks credibility he’s been wrong on everything” And then later Reagan referred to Cheney as an “unindicted war criminal”

Matthews then showed on air General Eaton’s response to Cheney’s efforts to undermine Obama. Matthews kept referring to Libby as a “convicted felon” And asked Gaffney why he would want to honor a “convicted felon”

Whoa did it get heated

I thought Ron Reagan was going to blow a fuse. Matthews has it loaded up tonight. Congressman Grayson on calling the Republicans “the party of nobody” Chris Matthews goes on to ask Grayson “who appointed you Captain Cojones”

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036697/#33439056
—————————————-
Was surprised that Matthews or Reagan did not bring up how the Bush administration had ignored all of Clarke’s warnings. Especially since Cheney opened up the door on what one administration gets from the previous administration

This is well worth a read, too. It is amazing how closely this latest spy scandal parallels Sibel Edmonds' assertions about what the Turkish and Israeli intelligence agencies are doing to steal our weapons technology. This latest scandal.....
