National Security Advisor Jim Jones on Israel-US Relations and Middle East Peace

Share / Recommend - Comment - Print - Wednesday, Oct 28 2009, 10:44AM

General Jim Jones, President Obama's National Security Advisor, addresses J Street's first national conference from Isaac Luria on Vimeo.

National Security Adviser Jim Jones emphasizes the importance of getting beyond the status quo in the Israel-Palestine conflict. He commits that President Obama and his team would participate in J Street's work every year -- which is a strong vote of confidence in this new American Jewish organization.

And his commentary on Iran was constructive -- not full of the kind of implied bullying that we have heard from other senior Obama administration officials -- that does little to move the policy needle on Iran's course.

I was not pleased, however, with Jones' characterization of the Goldstone Report -- but I do applaud Jones' focus on the Israel-Palestine challenge and to a viable two-state solution.

Whats that mean, Steve, "getting beyond the status quo"?? The Israeli's would like to do that too, but in a different direction than someone with respect for human rights would wish.

What, exactly, did Jones say that wasn't read from the same script we've heard for years now? And as far as committing "that President Obama and his team would participate in J Street's work every year"...so what? Jones also spoke at the San Diego AIPAC affair. Why aren't we being told what he said there??? Why can't I find a transcript of his AIPAC speech? Heres what the AIPAC website says he and Romney said....

"Both speakers warned of Iran's quest for a nuclear weapons capability and stressed the importance of close ties between the United States and Israel"

"Participating" in J Street's affairs hardly constitutes political risk of any seruious degree, and certainly doesn't promise change in actual policy. Did you hear Jones say a single thing about the settlements? And if Obama and Jones refuse to accept Goldstone's challenge to debate the Goldstone report, don't you find Jones' statement that the report is "overly broad" as being more than a little chickenshit? I mean, lets face it, this isn't some minor ho-hum issue like an American citizen, engaged in peaceful protest, being shot in the head by Israeli jackboots; this is about Israeli bombers dumping white phosphorous on Palestinian women and children.

And where was this mouse Kerry? Did he end up bailing at AIPAC's behest as a number of other Dems did?

And WTF is this hortsehit about "preconditions"? I suppose Israel demanding that any Palestinian State be militarily dsefenseless is not a "precondition"? And Israel's intransigence about the status of Jerusalem is not a "precondition"? Why is it that the Palestinian's "preconditions" are always underscored, while Israel's "preconditions" are ignored in the debate.

And what counts more diplomatically?? Hillary's inflammatory rhetoric on Iran, or Jones underlying fearmongering, disguised as moderation?

My bet? We never will find a transcript of what Jones said at the AIPAC affair. But really, we don't need to. If this weak bit of pandering to J Street is any indication of the direction the Obama Administration is going to take, we've got decades of history with which to judge what constitutes the gist of impending policies.

Yes, Israel, we will continue to send you billions every year so you can cook human beings in white phosphorous, steal their land, deprive them of sustenance and livelyhood, and thumb your noses at all semblance of human decency, international law, and basic morality. And if you need any more weapons, just let the whores in Congress know, I'm sure they'll oblige you.
