Dominique Strauss-Kahn is one of Europe’s premier political operators. Scandals and intrigue seem to add to his mystique, at least when it comes to French politics.
A poll was released today in France indicating that among Democratic Socialists, Strauss-Kahn is favored by 33% of those questioned. Segolene Royal pulled 14%. Bertrand Delanoe 13%. Current party leader Martine Aubry drew just 9%.
Strauss-Kahn now runs the International Monetary Fund for which G-20 nations are scrambling to expand resources. So whereas Strauss-Kahn, recently pilloried for a sex scandal involving a former staff member, came to a position that many people thought would be a dead end with the perceived decline of IMF relevance in a world glut (then) of capital.
Since the global financial crisis, the IMF is back big time — and Strauss-Kahn is surfing the waves of renewed Bretton Woods importance.
But he may just decide to leave DC while he’s ahead and go back to France to challenge Sarkozy in the next presidential elections.
If he does, he should check out the small village of Pomerol near the Medieval town of St. Emilion where I am working for a few days. I am staying at the Chateau Pomeaux and highly recommend the wine from here (great years: 1998, 2000, 2005).

Afghan challenger alleges fraud
The main challenger in presidential elections held in Afghanistan last week, Abdullah Abdullah, has alleged widespread fraud.

I don’t know if I should trust Albert Einstein, the first author on your list. “Einstein” is a German-derived Jewish occupational surname for one who works in stone, which may mean that Einstein is from the diamond-mongering caste of the Ashkenazim.
But clearly, the fact that Einstein achieved such resounding success in physics in 1905 and 1915 proves that Jews were never persecuted in the 20th century.

It’s interesting that when Paul Wolfowitz showed favoritism to his lover at the World Bank he was fired but when Strauss-Kahn had an affair with a subordinate he wasn’t.
But hypocricsy aside Strauss-Kahn’s extramarital affair won’t disqualify him from running for President of France, it’s practically a credential.
Francois Mitterand had numerous extramarital affairs and had a dsughter, Mazarine, with his mistress Anne Pingeot.
Of course, President Sarkozy’s second wife Cecilia dumped him after his affair with Carla Bruni became public. Bruni is now Sarkozy’s third wife.
It is widely reported that Jaques Chirac also had several affairs although who would have him remains a mystery.
Of course neither Strauss-Kahn (a future President?), Sarkozy, Chirac, Mitterand or Giscard d’Estaing (also well known for his galavanting) can top the performance of the French President in 1899, Félix Faure. He died during oral sex with his mistress at the Elysées.

I would be interested to know how Mr. Strauss-Kahn compares to the last two Managing Directors from France, Jacques de Larosière and Michel Camdessus.
I know that Camadessus was intensely disliked in many developing nations for insisting that they adopt harsh austerity programs in return for loans. I also remember quite well that Joe Stiglitz who was a World Bank official at the time harshly criticized the IMF and its leadership under Camadessus. Former World Bank President, James Wolfensohn was also critical but more diplomatic about it. And I know that George Soros was particularly disdainful of the role of the IMF from the mid 1970s to the end of the century.
By tradition, an American always holds the title of President of the World Bank and a European is always Managing Director of the IMF.
My impression is that the World Bank has always been slightly more progressive in its lending policies than the IMF. I could be wrong, but I believe that even during the scandal plagued tenure of Bush appointee Paul Wolfowitz that the World Bank had a better reputation in developing nations than the IMF.
Does anyone know if Strauss-Kahn is continuing the legacy of his predecessors or whether he has helped the organization turn over a new leaf?
